Unit Camp 2011

This is the first camp I had in NP, so yes; I was looking forward to it. (: Before the camp, we had to prepare our flag and cheer. As I could only help out with the flag after school, I didn’t do much.When I came to help, the flag was already about 90% done. But it was all thanks to the sec 2 seniors that we could finish it in time. As for the cheer, we weren’t really prepared as it was kind of plain. So, we had to think of it during the camp.

Training didn’t start quite well though, as we were late for falling in. Less than half of our squad was even there. I think we should be more punctual and practice PICARD too. After dividing into our groups, we went to our bunks on the second floor. We had to work together to move the tables and chairs in order to make space for sleeping. Next, we went down to play the “10 Fingers” game. But luckily, I did not “die”. However,because the other group mates said we had to practice “One for all, All for one”,we had to do the forfeit we had thought of with them. We were made to pull up our pants, tuck in our shirts, run and say “I look good like that”. It was embarrassing but overall, it was still quite enjoyable. After that we played the “Scissors, Paper, Stone” game. It was exciting as my group Mickey Mouse, won just by one person. It was lucky for the other group too as they need not do a forfeit.

We had about 2.5 hours of campcraft. Even though we had already learnt some of the knots previously, we still weren’t very sure of how to do it. Well, at least for this time, we managed to learn some new knots.After campcraft when there is still time, we learnt the cheers for the campfire. Although some of the cheers were new to us, we quickly got the hang of it and managed to do it properly.

Soon, it was time for dinner and we did field cooking.This is my first time and I could only follow the seniors’ instruction and do my part. At least I’ve learnt that applying toothpaste on the mass tin could prevent burning. As I was hungry, the food tasted quite nice. (:

After dinner, we went to learn the other cheers. At the time, most of us were already quite tired. So, I felt quite sleepy halfway and I was not very focus. But when we were made to stand and do the actions along with the cheers, I was more awake. At last, it was supper time and we ate quickly and had our debrief. We quickly had our shower and went to sleep.

In the middle of the night, we were awoken by the fire drill. However, we took quite a long time to assemble, including the roll call.I think we should be better planned and act faster.

The next day, we had PT in the morning. It wasn’t as bad as I expected as my group only owed around 30.

It was breakfast and we had the same food again. The only new thing was Milo. That tasted the best and gave the most energy. I was quite sick of the food especially the baked beans. We were all packed and left for the Henderson Waves.

During the hike, we did many cheers and had much fun too. We had to endure the part where there were many flights of stairs. It was tiring but still bearable. I think I bonded better with the other group mates during the hike when we cheered each other on. Finally it was lunch time and we could rest. I had quite a lot of food to finish especially the energy bars. I had 4 of them and it was very filling. The food was more than enough.

On the way back to school, I slept throughout the whole journey as I was tired. I was quite awake after that and had the energy to continue with the drill session. We learnt “Kebelakang” on the march. It was very confusing. Even after doing it many times, I still could not really do it.

Next, we had to prepare for the camp fire performance.My group wasn’t really prepared so we were having a pretty slow progress. But at least over dinner, it was settled and we were just left with practice.Despite the few rehearsals, we still weren’t that prepared. Finally, it was time for the camp fire. It was interesting to see the fire light up and there were many great performances. Our performance didn’t go quite smoothly and we had quite a few pauses. I think if we were more prepared next time, it will be more successful.

It was finally time for the night games! As there was not enough time, we did not mange to complete all the stations but we got to know the alumni seniors better. My favourite was the mental hospital. I think it was quite successful as many people screamed and it was scary. However, I did not know what we were really suppose to do and did not understand the clues too.

In the middle of the night we had the fire drill again. This time, we did it faster as we were sure of what to do.

On the last day, we had a more tiring PT as running was included. We had our breakfast and tried to finish as much food as possible.When it comes to the mass cleaning, my group was assigned to clean the mass tins and tent sheets. It wasn’t as easy as it looks. It was difficult to scrape off the burnt areas from the mass tins and we had to do it quite a few times till it got out.

We had the prize giving ceremony and we had to do our cheer again. Everyone gave their best since it will be the last time we will be doing it.

At last, it was time to go home. I felt that even this camp was tiring, it was still fun and we got to know each other better and learn new things. :D

CSI Course

On the 20th of July, 6 of us from the Sec3 squad went for the CSI (Crime Scene Investigation) course, which was held in Home Team Academy. We were the first school to reach, and therefore was allowed to explore the HTA Training Village in the vicinity of the CSI room.

After all the schools had arrived, we proceeded to the CSI room. We saw mannequins and real furniture which depicted real life situations that the Investigation Officers will face. We saw cases such as homicide, car crash , residential fire and office fire. We were also being taught of the steps taken by the police and IOs upon arrival of the scene. Through this course, we learnt not to jump into conclusion and judge a book by its cover as things may not be as it seems.

Next, we headed another exhibit that talks about terrorism. We learned about the threats that may disturb the peace in our country and invoke fear in people's heart. Such threats are biological agent, explosives and chemical agents. There were even real life examples of such threats and photos. After that, we saw another exhibit where we were able to smell the chemicals used. Finally, this concluded our 1hour 30 mins CSI Course.

In the nutshell, we enjoyed our time there and learnt alot about CSI and terrorism. It was indeed a great pity that only 6 people were allowed to go for this course. I hope the subsequent batches will able to go for this course next time.

Drill Competition 2011

It was the first time our unit ever participated in a drill competition. Everyone of us were hoping to be the representatives for our squad, but unfortunately only 14 people can participate in this drill competition. 1 parade commander, 1 reserve and others doing drills.

Before the drill competition, we had to attend a series of drill trainings. Even though most of the trainings were tiring but I feel that we really benefited alot from it. The competition has also deepened out relationship.

The drill competition was held on a bright and sunny 16th July. The participants and the supporters gathered in school at around 8.55am outside the Npcc room. After which, the bus came at 9am sharp and brought us to the Home Team Academy, where the competition would be held. After we drop off from the bus, we marched all the way to the drill shed. The first thing we did after reaching was to get changed into and register. Then we proceeded to uniform inspection which was part of the drill competition. After that, we practised the drills for the last time to correct any mistakes made. The ma'ams were cracking jokes to ease the tense atmosphere before we entered the Unity Square.

Finally, the time has come. The parade commander, CPL Matilda, gave us commands to march into the competition grounds. The parade commander asked for permission to start the drills from the Sirs. We had practised diligently for the past few months for this drill competition, under the supervision of Rayseen Ma'am, Jacinth ma'am and Wanling ma'am, so we had very high expectations of ourselves. As the signal was heard, we began doing the drills. Everyone was concentrating on doing the drills. We managed to have nice 'bangs' and coordinate well.

At last, the competition ended after 4 minutes. We marched out of the parade after granting permission from the Sirs. Even though, some of us could not coordinate well, but nevertheless, we felt that we had put in our best efforts.

Through this drill competition, I think that all us had become closer to each other. This completion had strengthen the bonds between our unit as we had spend much time together during the trainings. It will definitely leave a good memory for all of us.

Police knowledge course 2

On 22 June 2011, we went for the Police knowledge course 2 (PK course 2). Laws are made to ensure peace and order among people. Here in the PK course, we've learnt many different crimes that are still rampant in modern day society. The officer speakers were very humorous and made the talk fun and interesting! During the talk, we were also given many real life scenarios about some crimes and were taught how to handle such situations.

We were also taught different kinds of laws associated to these crimes and the seriousness of the crime. For example, for vandalism, we could get caning! And, skits done by cadets got us engaged in the talks. My squad mates and i benefited alot from this course as we also understood how the police officers work and what are the basic qualities that a police officer should have. We also learnt what traffic police officers must do in times of emergency e.g road accidents. I also learnt when cadets should salute and who must we salute to. Lastly, we had a test to check our understanding of this talk.

Overall, I find this course very fruitful and meaningful due to the knowledge we've have gained.

Hui Juan's Police K-9 Unit Reflection

Day 1

When I was stepped into the Police K-9 Unit, I could not recognise anyone as most of us are from different areas. Soon enough, our instructor came and gave us a tour around the place. I never knew that dogs were that commonly used by the police! After that, we went to our lockers to change and put our belongings.

We were split into pairs; one pair would be given one dog. I was a little afraid as the dogs were quite big and they kept barking at us. We were told to put the collar around the dogs and leash them. Luckily, my partner was experienced, so I let her go first. We brought it out of the kennel and to the exercise area, where the dog will do its business.

Next, we brought the dogs to the grooming area, where we massaged, washed and combed the dogs. Through this, I was less afraid of the dog and began to communicate with my partner more too. We had to carry plastic bags with us in case the dog did its business. Walking the dog was quite a challenge as they had a lot of strength and they would rather prefer a run to a walk. In addition, the leashes we used were rough and caused abrasions to some of us.

We had lunch together and we managed to talk and joke around. Initially, I thought it would be quite hard for us to bond as most of us were from different areas and we were not all the same age. My partner and I are the only sec 2s among the 6. After that, we were allowed to each handle a dog. We bathed, groomed and walked the dogs. I was happy that I was able to control my dog better. Lastly, we fed the dogs and that was the end of our day.

Day 2

On the 2^nd day, we were given a demonstration on how a sniffer dog detects things such as firearms, drugs and illegal immigrants. We were told that the dog handler had only undergone 2 dry runs and this was her first time doing the real procedure. We were impressed at how she handled the dog so well. Next we went to the field to see a dog handler and his dog doing distance training and the procedures of a dog helping to arrest a delinquent by our very own instructor. The dogs were well disciplined, they executed every command their dog handler said.

After that, we brought out our dogs from the kennels and did our usual procedure, which was to exercise and groom them. We had a special task from our instructor; we had to play with our dogs! Each one of us was given a ball and the entire training area to play. The dogs would chase after the ball and even jump to get it! However, the dogs were possessive over the ball and would not let go of it. Finally we washed the kennels and fed the dogs.

Day 3

I was quite sad as this would be the last day we got to interact with the dogs and see my new found friends. Firstly, we went to Woodlands Checkpoint to see the dogs in action. We got to travel there in a real police van! We learnt how dogs were used to check for illegal items and how they were taken care of there. We even got to see how the dogs were used to check the trains! Our instructor said that we were quite lucky as we were the first batch to be able to see that.

We went back to Police k-9 Unit and took photos with our dogs in full u. After that, we changed and played with our dogs in the field for the last time. Our instructor allowed us to play more as it was our last time together. Later, we put them back in kennels and fed them. That was our last interaction with them. Lastly, we got our certificates for attending the attachment.

In a nutshell, it was an eye opener for me as I had never been to the k-9 Unit and rarely would people see the dogs working like I did. Furthermore, I met great friends that I would never forget. It’s definitely an unforgettable experience.

Today, the sec 2s had campcraft training on flag-pitching. After that they had physical training and games.

In the meantime, the sec 1s performed their total defence skits to achieve their Total Defence Bronze.

Questions were prompted to find out if the cadets truly understands the five aspects of Total Defence and that if they could explain why their skits showcase the essence of Total Defence.

There's a total of 3 skits. You may not be able to hear what they are saying because of the noise from the canteen and that the sec 1s may be too soft :)

Today the sec 3 batch had our 2nd class drill. We had a crash course of baton, and rifle drills. Despite making a few mistakes, i think we did quite well, considering the fact that it's been quite a while since we last had drills together as a squad.

Shannon's Reflection on LMSC

On the 25th and 26th of June, my squadmates and I attended a leadership and mentoring skills course organised by the area 10 cadet instructors at Bedok South Secondary School.

We reported on the first day at Bedok South in our full uniform. Thereafter the twelve of us were split into 8 different groups. These groupings would be the groups in which we carried out our activities during the next 2 days and they consisted other cadets from other schools in Area 10. We proceeded to the school hall whereby our lectures would be held. We had a lecture on

Lectures ( Effective Communication, identifying different types of learners etc. )

Team-building games

Through this course, it has definitely taught me to be a better leader. The lectures that I went through such as the one on identifying the different types of learners had been useful and will definitely be of use in future. Other than learning to become a better cadet leader, I have also learnt that effective communication is of utmost importance in a team in order for a task to be carried out successfully. Furthermore, this course was very fun as I got to play numerous team-building games that not only enabled me to have fun and bond with my group-mates, I also learnt teamwork in process.

All in all, it has been a great and enriching experience.

Unit Camp: 21st to 23rd May

Shu Shan's Reflections for unit camp (21^st – 23^rd May)

As the camp started, I was shocked to find that we are playing games instead of the usual stuffs like drills and campcraft. It had started off with fun and excitement. After that, we learnt the basics of tent pitching, like tying the bowline, tent guy loop and the terms used for all the sheets etc. Although there wasn’t much to remember, I still couldn’t remember all of them, but I certainly learnt a lot from it. At night, the seniors thought us the cheers that we’ll be singing during campfire. It really refreshed my memory on last year’s camp. Although during the learning of the cheers, all the flags got stolen due to our carelessness, we managed to pay back all of them on that day itself. The sec1s were all very cooperative, willing to take the initiative to hold the flags and give response whenever we asked a question. It was a great time with them during the camp.

The next day, we had a 4 hour hike at Bukit Timah. It was tiring, but fun as well. Although it was tiresome to climb, but with the encouragements given, we still made it. The hike really made our squad bond with each other, along with the sec1s too. After the hike, we had to pitch our own tents as we had to sleep in it for the night. While the seniors were teaching, I finally got the hang of it. Although this time, we pitched our tents successfully cause of the seniors helping us, but it was a fruitful experience. I learnt a lot from it and with more teamwork, we can do it. Finally, we pitched 3 tents in total for the 12 of us. It was really fun and I felt the sense of achievements upon seeing the 3 tents we’ve pitched. After that, it was campfire! It was really an enjoyable night that day, with all the performances and cheers. When the campfire ended, we had to play night games. The atmosphere was kind of scary but with all the encouragements given, our group remained calm. The games were fun too.

Finally, it was the last day of camp. We didn’t do much but we had a mini campcraft test. We did all the lashings and stuff. The whole squad had dropped in standard due to lack of practices but that would serve as a motivation for us to work harder. Finally, after the area cleaning, it was prize giving time. Our group had gotten the best group! After all this, the camp had finally come to an end… Although the camp was physically demanding, it was a fun and enjoyable one.

This camp really made me realized the importance of teamwork in both groups and squads, and the phrase goes, “One for All and All for One”.

Zhen Ying's Reflection: STC 18th-20th June 2010

Our STC had just ended but the fun memories I had created with my Unit 10 mates remains fresh in my mind. I have truly enjoyed this camp! It was not as tough as ATC's as STC is mainly to expose us to outdoor activities and I personally believe, finding your purpose in NPCC.

STC was more enjoyable as I believed I had opened up more than during ATC's. I had also met many other Unit 10 people and made more friends. During the times when our group was pondering hard for group cheers and name, I could feel everyone was trying their best and putting in effort... I find it amusing as I just suddenly got high and shouted, " HOW ABOUT TRANSFORMERS?! ", and started doing some superhero actions and sang to the Transformers' theme song... I think it was fun to pull everyone's spirit together and go high together when we got excited as everyone was satisfied with this group name.

And this is how... TRANSFORMERS are born~
During the outdoor activities, whereby we did jetty jump, IRC. Due to low tides, groups 1, 2 and 3 could not do the jetty jump but did some low swimming-pool-like jump. Despite our disappointment, we were glad to get wet and got a taste of the super rich taste of the super salty sea water. IRC was very rewarding. I personally think that Ropes course meets educational, developmental, and recreational goals. It asks one to focus on reaching the goal and to confront and conquer personal fears. It also asks one to place their trust to those who are managing the ladders and believe that they will be there to help when one is facing much anxieties. It also asks one to take its responsibility, to consistently look out for his or her groupmate, encouraging and supporting them. Altogether, I believe that it has explored group interaction, problem-solving, and trust. Thus, i find IRC very fruitful and rewarding as I was deeply touched when those groupmates whom i did not interact with, consistently looking up and offering me with many words of encouragement and also praises when i did the course with swiftness and confidence after i confronted my fears at the flexible and unsteady ladder portion. Thus, I felt thankful to be with TRANSFORMERS! -tears-

During the third day, after cleaning up, we had an overall unit 10 debrief. It was very refreshing to me as i felt that the 3D-2N camp was very fun and it was sad that it is over... During the prize presentation to the best group, best campers. I was extremely stunned and surprised that I've got the best female STC camper... I am extremely thankful for my squadmates and sec 2s who cheered and clapped loudly for me and still now, i'm very surprised...

I believe this STC camp has taught me alot and somewhat groomed me into a person with a better leadership mindset. It has instilled the PICARD, especially sense of urgency in everyone. I hope that my unit will slowly have this PICARD attitude in our lives to become a better person. Despite being a very carefree and goofy person, I will try hard to be a good and responsible leader in AHSNPCC to truly be worthy of this STC camper award.

Rachael's Reflection: ATC 18th-20th June 2010

The seniors were telling us about ATC and what it would be like, and before that i'd heard stories from my sec 4 sister, who is also from NPCC. I wasn't actually worried... more of excited. But I felt for my friends who were worried about ATC. I was also really happy that we submitted full attendance with no one sick.

Upon arriving at Ubin, we hiked to Camp Resilience. But before we could reach, Mat had to report sick with a bad stomachache. I was really worried; if she had to go home, it would be an awful waste. However, THANK GOD! We later saw her at campsite after being taken there by van, feeling and looking a lot better.

Camp Resilience: First impressions.... It was HUGE and I recognized the High Ropes elements from the pictures I'd seen on FaceBook. The place was very organised.

The CIs were friendly, though some of them were strict. Then again, i knew they had to be strict.

Tent pitching was a similar experience to unit camp, if a bit scary. There was pressure and hope and trust instilled into us by Wan Ling Ma'am who gave us a time limit. I tried not to be affected by it but just continued with my pegging as best as I could. I think a major problem was we spent too much time pitching the first tent. Thankfully, my group managed to pitch both tents in time.

Following that, they asked for volunteers, first to look for pegs, and we volunteered hastily. I was really happy to see that some of my squadmates were opening up. They then asked for 15 volunteers and all were from AHS! On on hand, it was funny, on the other hand, it was good. Wan Ling Ma'am had a proud and approving on her face, our squad was laughing but we went happily and willingly, yet with sense of urgency.

Day 2

Dat 2 was really fun. Be it, kayaking, land expedition, or low rope elements. I especially enjoyed kayaking, as we teamed up more than usual, mutual teamwork through hard times. We did not complete Land Ex as I brought them the wrong way. I felt guilt when both groups blamed me. I felt especially pressurised that the entire batch of them relied on me to lead the way. Thankfully, some of the boys from my group helped me. Although we only reached one checkpoint, Pekan Quarry, it was enjoyable enough.

In low ropes, when it came to the girls' turn, the CIs must have turned the lights off too abruptly as some of the girls screamed. I led them through the maze. I kept feeling a dead end til I discovered the tunnel in a corner so the end. I felt proud that I managed to lead them through, after the blow at my self-confidence from the Land Ex.

Rock climbing was tiring. I have weak arms, and I kept falling down, as though I were going lower and lower, and I persevered till I eventually reached the top and shouted 'falling' tiredly. It was a good experience though.

The whole time we had to think of group name and cheer. We were not bonded enough till out of desperation, Sir Austin knocked us down. THEN we began thinking and really trying for a cheer. We worked hard and got a cheer together for the campfire. I think the ATC-ians were not enthusiastic enough through the campfire. I did my best to cheer and clap and still had a great time in the end.

Later, during group debrief, our Sir said, " I know now that you all work well under one thing: PRESSURE!" as he felt that our group's cheer is good. Upon reviewing the activities, I agreed with Sir that the camp was not to train but to expose us to fun activities and sports.

Batch 3's Passing Out Parade

On the 16^th April 2010, our secondary 4 seniors were officially passed out as Staff Sergeants. Our growing unit bid nostalgic farewell to our secondary 4 seniors who will be concentrating on their upcoming O-levels. As the newest generation of NCOs, our secondary 3 squad is both excited and nervous with our new responsibilities we are shouldering. Knowing that we will face increasingly number of challenges and high public expectation, we were especially grateful to our instructor cadets ( I/Cs ) who have taught us so much.

We had our passing-out parade, immediately followed by a muster parade. Afterwhich, we changed to our PT kit and proceeded to the Audio Visual Theatre (AVT) for our farewell party. The farewell party started with Annual General Meeting, by our secondary 4 seniors. Shortly after the meeting, the secondary 3s took over and the farewell party went on smoothly.

Firstly, our secondary 3s had a ‘Forget the Lyrics’ game whereby the singers have to create impromptu lyrics to the songs. The seniors did great and the lyrics, expressing their love for NPCC, were really sweet.

Next, the secondary 2s had a mini guessing game show. The unit had to guess the owner of those quotes which were usually expressed during our trainings. It was rather interesting and touching that our cadets are able to remember those quotes that the seniors said.

After that, energetic and enjoyable dance performances were delivered by our secondary 1 juniors!

Lastly, the secondary 4 seniors danced ‘Run Devil Run’ by Girls’ Generation. It was captivating and very well-prepared and we were amazed by our seniors’ dancing skills.

After all the performances, the atmosphere and mood in the AVT immediately became solemn. The secondary 3 cadets made their speech, thanking the seniors for their guidance, expressing apologies for their misbehaviours and also giving assurance that they will bring the unit to greater heights. It was followed by speeches by the secondary 2s and secondary 1s, expressing gratitude to the secondary 4 seniors for their care, concern and guidance.

Lastly, the secondary 4 seniors made their speeches. Their farewell speeches were emotion and nostalgic which was evident from the fact that everyone was starting to tear while listening. One could imagine how the memories of the tears and joys throughout the secondary 4s’ NP life must have flooded their minds making some of the seniors speechless momentarily.

After the speeches, we presented our unit gifts to our secondary 4s, which were mini slippers and cactuses, which are already named by the secondary 3s. We then had a pizza treat from our teachers-in-charge and everyone enjoyed our last meal together with the secondary 4s. During the treat, the secondary 4 seniors gave cards and presents to their juniors, expressing support and love for them.

“My home is where the heart lies”.

I believe one day, the seniors will refer back to their NPCC days with pride and joy, and as somewhere they can call home. Not forgetting all the instructors whom have taught us so much, without any of you, our unit won’t be where it is now, standing straight and proud!

Jacinth's Reflection on 6th Mar 2010 High Ropes Challenge (HRC)

The Secondary 4 Cadet Leaders came back from the High Ropes Challenge (HRC) Course with individual stories of their wonderful experience to share. Mine was an interesting and fruitful encounter with the seemingly threatening skyhigh wooden blocks that we were supposed to conquer by the time the day ends. Everyone had mixed feelings on the way there; some were exclaiming about how high the elements would be while others just sat quietly trying to keep the anxiety silently inside. There were also those who were excited about how this would pose as a challenge that could help them overcome their fear of heights through such a fun way. For me, this was not the first time being exposed to the high rope elements so I was not as terrified as the others but however, I was still a little jittery.

Sitting on the boat to an island knowing we're about to meet our ultimate doom was just plain painful. As girls and typical Singaporeans, some of us started taking out sunblock and passing them around, applying dollops of it to ourselves in the hope to keep the Sun a safe distance away. Finally, after our protective measures, we finally arrived at the jetty and into Pulau Ubin.

It was a long walk into the NPCC Campsite but we managed to pull through, arriving at our destination in one piece ready to meet any other challenge. The CIs then gave us a briefing before we grabbed our helmets and harnesses and set off for our various stations.

For Anglican High, the Tunnel was the first stop. The Sir tried to scare us by saying there were lizards in the tunnel, making some girls squeal in fright. After waiting for the other schools to attempt, it was finally our turn to go inside. We were split into 2 groups and mine was the second to go in. It was pitch dark inside and we couldn't see anything even if we opened our eyes because there was really nothing to see except darkness and more darkness. We crawled through the tunnel slowly but steadily, waiting for our fellow squadmates who were following closely behind. As we expected, the tunnel wasn't exactly smooth. We had to make small decisions like which way to turn in order for us to get out. At one point in time, there were balls under us and we had to figure our way out of them in total darkness. It served as a challenge for some of us who were afraid of the dark and a good experience for the rest. All of us came out of the darkness alive :)

Next, we went to the Pamper Pole. It was a tall vertical log that we had to climb and as soon as we maintained our balance at its peak, we were supposed to leap forward to grab hold of an iron rod in front of us, making us hang in mid air. It was a serious challenge for most of us because of the height factor but after constant encouragement, we were all rather game for it. Those who were more confident went first and had their share of the one of a kind experience. When it was my turn, I was nervous because the pole, though it looked so harmless, seemed to have my lifeline on it. My squadmates cheered me on and I guessed it was time to have a go. Climbing up was rather torturous; each step was getting me closer to death. By the time I reached the peak, I was almost overcome by my wobbling legs which were threatening to give way. With much struggling and hesitation, I managed to put both legs on the narrow platform, ready for my jump. "Jiayou!" from beneath me seemed to motivate me forward because before I knew it, I found myself reaching for the bar but due to my limited abilities to fly, I lost grip of the bar as soon as I touched it. Although I didn't make a perfect completion to the element, I know I overcame my fear and that was what mattered most. I did it!

Then, we went for the highlight of the entire HRC which was the Flying Fox reaching up to 7 storeys high. Everyone had to try once if not this trip wouldn't be worth the while. So we went in pairs up the stairs facing the 'lifelines' we were supposed to rely on. Soon enough, it was my turn and I was getting rather nervous but was calm enough to face it due to the companionship of my squadmate. The CI counted to three and I found myself screaming on the top of my lungs zooming down the line with the wind in my hair. There was nothing to be scared of actually and so I realized screaming for no apparent reason was working out because it turned out to be quite fun. It was indeed interesting how we could experience being airborne, even if there were ropes attached.

It was noon time by the time everyone got their turn so we went for lunch and had a quick break before proceeding on to the ARC (Advanced Ropes Challenge). It was basically an obstacle ropes course but instead it was higher up. Much higher up. There were 3 stages to the challenge. 1st stage: Walk on 2 metal wires with a rope for support. 2nd stage: Sit on a wooden platform and pull yourself to the other side with a rope. 3rd stage: Balance on a skateboard attached to 2 metal wires and slide yourself across holding on to some ropes for support. Some of us did not dare to try it because it was high up for one and it required quite an amount of energy to complete it. However, the encouragement and support from our squadmates made us motivated to try the challenge and in my opinion, I think is a really good experience. When I went up, the challenge seemed impossible even though I have done similar things before. Judging by the faces of my squadmates who tried and came down, it seemed quite difficult to achieve. The first step meant no turning back except to move forward so I did. I was glad to have my squadmates and Miss Lim who were below shouting words of motivation despite the glaring sunlight. After much struggle especially on the sliding uncontrollable skateboard, I completed the challenge and it was really satisfying to think back at it.

Other than doing the element itself, we also took turns to be the laddermen. That means to hold the ladder ready in case any of our squadmates lose balance and fall off. Although the sun was shining directly above us making it hard to look up, I guess it was worth it because we know at least we could do something to help our squadmates. This was a matter of trust, patience and alertness, not much of the skills. We had to be constantly aware of the surroundings in case anything happens to our squadmate, we have to aid them in the fastest time possible. Although not all of us completed the ARC, we played our part as different roles and gained valuable lessons through this simple activity. It really helped us learn.

While waiting to go on the Double Dangling Duo, we played some team building games. One of which was to transport water from one pail to the other with some rope and wooden handles. It was a game of teamwork, communication as all these aspects were required for us to be successful. We finally managed to complete it (just that we also spilled some water on the CI) within the given timing and that taught us that we could do things if only we had the will to do so.

Another game that we played was to have 4 people standing on wooden platforms and we were supposed to hold the ropes attached to it as handles so that we could move forward together. It required coordination and definitely communication to complete this task and we tried our best to do so. In the end, we managed to finish it :)

HRC ended with a walk back to the jetty, then taking a boat back to Singapore. It was really an enriching experience that was the ultimate highlight of our Secondary 4 life. What was most gratifying was to have gone through it with the company of my dearest squadmates :)

Sarah's Reflection on 27th Feb 2010 Campcraft Competition 2010

The campcraft competition ended successfully last Saturday with Team 2 in the morning and Team 1 later in the day. As I board the bus and left the competition venue, a mixture of feelings engulfed me. Looking back at the hard times we spent training for the competition, the times we did our structures under the blazing hot sun, the times we felt de-moralized because we could not attain the standard set, I find it all worthwhile for the effort we put in.

Weeks before the competition, we had to decide on whom to do which part and brainstorm on ideas for the structures, which we had a hard time to come to a decision with. I was part of the gadget team where my partner and I have to work hand in hand to finish the gadget on time. It was a real test of my knowledge for my knots and lashes, whether I was familiar with them.

This competition helped me revise all my campcraft skills and realize that teamwork is a vital factor between my partner and I. We had conflicts over the gadget but always end up apologizing to each other for not being able to control our emotions. Maybe that is why we are still able to work with each other so well and assist each other when in need. As days passed, and we continued to practice on our structures individually, improvising on the design as we go on.

Finally, when we finalized our designs and are ready to practice as an entire team with timing, the real challenge arrived. As days draw nearer to the competition date, we were still unable to finish all the structures within the given time of 12 minutes.

Everyone felt disheartened and discouraged, disappointed at ourselves being unable to attain good results even though we were just a few days away from the real competition. However, we managed to pick ourselves up quickly and improved drastically on our timing. So with much nervousness and anticipation, we went for the competition.

Even though it was just twelve minutes of the competition, it was a crucial twelve minutes for everyone. As the last horn sounded, I felt so relieved as this long endeavor has finally ended. I have gained knowledge of many aspects such as co-operation, determination and many more. This competition has definitely been a valuable lesson for me and an important milestone of my life.

Kimberly's Reflection on 27th Feb 2010 Campcraft Competition 2010

Finally after many hours of trainings and all the hard work we’ve put in, the competition is finally over! And the fact that we managed to complete everything in the given time made the whole process even better.

At first, when we were still in school, I thought that the weather would be alright for doing the competition. But the moment we stepped out into Peirce Secondary School’s field, the sun almost melted all of us, adding on to the anxiety and worry that everyone was feeling. When we were standing, waiting for the competition to commence, my palms were already sweaty, rendering all the plasters I’d put, useless.

When the horn sounded, everyone rushed off to take their logistics, trying to avoid hitting each other again like the previous training. The mallet that I used to peg for flagstaff and gadget was really really helpful. Despite the fact that it was at least five times heavier than what we used in school, I was really grateful we even had a mallet at all.

I was happy that flagstaff could finish in less than 7 min, faster than our normal practices, and that everything was done properly.

Hearing the other school’s supporters cheering so loudly, I feel kind of sad that we only had 4 supporters from Sec 2. However, that did not deter us from completing everything. Everyone was focused on doing their task, totally ignoring any pressure they felt, which was really inspiring.

It was very cool to see that at a point of time, a majority of the judges were all at our lot inspecting what we had built. Looking around at the other school’s gadgets, almost all the schools built a tripod for their gadget. That made us more convinced that we would score for our special gadget. One of the judges also said that the gadget people did a wonderful job and that all their lashings were properly tied tight.

Overall, whether it was due to the pressure of the competition or the will to do well, I did think that everyone of us did their best by putting in all their effort to complete everything.

NUS-NPCC .177 Air Rifle Shooting Competition (6-02-2010)

On the 6th of February, some of our secondary 3 and 4 cadets went to HomeTeamNS@BukitGombak for the NUS-NPCC .177 Air Rifle Shooting Competition. Before the competition, there were many practices held in our school's air rifle range. The start of the practice was disappointing as we weren't used to the air rifles and our shots weren't exactly ideal. With more practice, our shots were better and our confidence grew. However, on the day of the competition, even though we had our practice sessions, we still felt very nervous and it was like we had butterflies in our stomachs! (We didn't practice competition style.)

Detail after detail, it was finally our turn! We did our best to stop shaking (because we were so nervous!), started with our sighting shots, an average of about 10 sighting shots and we started on our competition shots after we felt it was time to start. Shot after shot, some were good and some weren't that good. We put in our utmost effort but we still lacked in the number of points in the team category and also in the individual category. In the end, we left with no trophies but we clinched the 4th, 5th and 6th positions in the team category. However, even though we didn't win anything, we learnt a lot from this competition. We learnt how to shoot more accurately, how to use the air rifle more familiarly, team work and how to do your best even with pressure.

It was a fun experience and we would definitely participate in it again.

All in all, it was good fun and great experience earned.

CCA Orientation 2010 (8-01-2010)

On the 8th of January 2010, our school had its annual CCA Orientation. This orientation showcase was given to the secondary 1s of 2010 an idea of the different CCAs available in Anglican High School. AHSNPCC sec4'10 did PDS, sec3&4'10 did fancy footdrill, and the sec2'10 did PT drill.
We practiced very hard for this showcase and our efforts paid off. We put in our best in the performances and we enjoyed the process. Even though there were different technical faults with the PA system on that very day, we did not panic and maintained calm and finished our performance nicely.
Our booth was set up with some spars, canteen tables and dowell poles. We also hung up our banner and displayed some trophies and items that showed more about AHSNPCC. After all the performances put up by the UGs, the sec 1s were allowed to visit the booths to know more about the different UGs. During this period of time, our cadets went to bring sec 1s to our booth to let them know more about our CCA and to convince them to join our CCA.
After everything ended, we packed up and kept the things back into the NP room and that was the end of the day. We had fun during the entire CCA Orientation and we gained new experiences from this showcase. All in all, it was great fun! :D
Our efforts paid off and we got a total of 13 new secondary 1 cadets. :D

Overseas Educational Visit to Hong Kong Macau 2008

On 17 to 23 November, 4Officers, 4 Cadet Inspectors and 30 cadets chosen from different schools came together to attend an overseas educational trip to Hong Kong and Macau. Together we visited several Hong Kong Police establishment such as the Hong Kong Police Head Quarters (Old and New), Police Dog Unit, Police Tactical Unit and the Marine Police. Not only that, we even got to interact with cadets from the Junior Police Call located at Cheung Chung Island of Hong Kong and also the Macau Flying Eagle Association. This educational trip which also serves as an exchange program, has truly further enriched all the cadets with knowledge about Hong Kong Police Force.

This is the first overseas trip experience with NPCC for me, and it was indeed a memorable trip for me too. Although it only lasted for 7 days and 6 nights but even till now, the trip still brings many good memories back. I believe it was a fun and fulfilling trip for all of us, as I have truly learnt a lot more about the police establishment of other countries and also made lots of good friends from all around Singapore.

On the first day, before I even reached the airport, I was already filled with excitement and eagerness to find out what this journey had in store for us. When I reached Changi Airport , I saw unfamiliar faces and started to feel a little nervous as I do not know how I am going to stay with a bunch of strangers except one squadmate I knew. After we checked in our luggage we started to take group photo and chat around. Not long after, we took a 5 hour plus flight on the Singapore Airlines, where we started to get along with some group mates. So after we got off the plane, we got to experience the cold weather that we can never get in Singapore. Then we went to have our first dinner at a Hong Kong restaurant with our luggages placed on the bus. The food served in Hong Kong is indeed much more different than those served in Singapore. Thus in this trip we also got to try the different traditional food in Hong Kong which is really interesting and delicious. Not only this, after dinner we went for sight-seeing where we were all wrapped like “dumpling”. We were driven up to the Peak to visit the Wax museum and also enjoy the scenery. During the bus ride, the tour guide also gave us some brief information about the different areas of Hong Kong .

On the second day, we had our morning call at 6 and we got ready to go to the Old Police Headquarters in Hong Kong. Where we learn that buildings of different style were built at different parts of the Headquarters. For example, the front where the people come to make police reports. The building is built to give a magnificent look so that everyone will respect the Hong Kong Police. While for the inside, they will built them more differently, giving a relaxing look, so that the cadets get a not so solemn feeling working in it. After that, we went deeper into the Headquarters where we get to take a look at the old jail and court. With special request, we also got to enter the old execution ground which was said to be haunted. Thus overall, the trip in the Old Hong Kong headquarters was rather interesting as we were given a very rare chance to see the different parts of a Police HQ, especially the jail and execution ground and also learn how the headquarters works in dealing with different situations. After lunch, we went to the Police Training Unit, not only did we get to see the parade square where they train, we were also fortunate enough to witness a training conducted there. It was really cool as the parade square was also a scene frequently used in Hong Kong dramas, other than that their training are much more different than those in Singapore. It was an eye-opener when we saw how they commanded in English and how strict their training was. Another place which gave us a shock was the stimulation area. We were so attracted to the place that we took pictures non-stop. The place was really cool. It is the place where the police train how to manage different situations, for example, conducting searches in pubs. After that we took a few group photos with the officers. Next, we went for our dinner and proceeded for sight-seeing at the Avenue of Stars. The wind there was really strong and we took quite a few pictures of the stunning scenery. Next activity was one of the unforgettable ones, where we got to interact with JPC friends and have BBQ. We talked and did some cheers and songs with them. Till now we still are in contact with some of the JPCs on Facebook.

On the third day, we went to the Police Training Unit again to take a look at the vehicles they use during training. Everyone went up to the vehicle to take a look as well as to take pictures. We also got to shop in their small souvenir shop. After the visit we went to their Dog Unit. We learnt about the different types of dogs they used. We were lucky as we got to see the dogs in training, example during searches. I can truly say that the dogs are really obedient and clever! We also saw how they took care the dogs and the hospital facilities they provide for the dogs. Lastly, we saw a very exciting scene where a trainee wore a "protected" attire and tried running away, the dog did his job by catching him back and protected his handler well. It was a good experience after all as the dog unit is quite different from Singapore’s K9 unit. After that, we went to the Marine Police where we took the ship to Cheng Zhou Island. The ship ride was really enjoyable, the breeze was really nice. When we reached Cheng Zhou we went interacted with the JPCs once again. In fact, I still miss the JPCs people till now, they are really friendly towards us. Then we had our seafood dinner before we took a ferry back to the hotel.

On the forth day, it was the first day we wore full-u throughout the whole trip. The girls wore skirts, thus it was the first time we wore the full uniform with stockings. We went to visit the New Police Headquarters, where we went for formal exchange program with the JPCs, they were also in their full-uniform too. The Hong Kong JPCs were nice , they even gave us a bag filled with keychains and articles where we can read more about them. Through the presentation, we learnt more about JPC, about the different ranks and activities and they got to know more about Singapore Police Force too. Next we went to a nearby police station, where the officers brought us in to take a look at how their normal police station works. We also got to see the room where the suspects are detained before going to court. After the visit, we got to shop at the souvenir shop at the Police Headquarters. It is really big and we got to shop for cute keychains attached to small police figurines. After that we also got to visit a JPC establishment and we interacted with the kids there. We also showcased our drill to our beloved JPCs members, and I really felt proud doing the drills in my full-uniform in Hong Kong. Later in the evening, we got up an open-decked bus to experience the cool breeze and beautiful scenery. Then we reached Ladies Street where we got to shop for an hour plus with our group members. The people there were really fierce and unreasonable, they started forcing us to buy their products. Most of us were shocked, thus in the end we did not buy much things. Of course, it was also my first time shopping alone with friends on an open street, thus I will never forget that experience.

On the fifth day, it was our Disney Land Day. The most enjoyable day ever! Firstly we were split into 2 groups where the tour guide brought us around and told us more about disney animation to us. We also learnt about the history of animation, for example who drew the first animation and which 5 second long animation was first introduced. Then we even got to try out drawing Mickey Mouse, sadly some of our Mickey Mouse(s) ended up as Jerry the mouse. Next we went to the theatre to watch the short 3D animation produced by a local Hong Kong producer. It was really entertaining and fascinating. The 3D effects were really wonderful. We also learnt how much hard work is put in behind one short animation, thus after this tour I learnt to appreciate all the animations I see. After the trip with the tour guide, we were allowed to go around with our own group. We went to play the one and only roller coaster for a few times, and also took pictures while touring around the place. The finale was still the fireworks, they were beautiful. Using the special cellophane paper glasses given, the fireworks were made more beautiful!

On the sixth day, we woke up really early to catch the ferry to Macau. When we reached Macau, we went to one of the museum to take a look at different ship figurines and different traditional houses and rituals of Macau. After that, we went to shop for famous egg tarts and biscuits. They were really delicious. Then we went for our buffet lunch, and we ate a lot. One of the officer even treated us to drinks, I am really thankful to the officer. Next, we went to interact with the people from Flying Eagle Association. It was the first time we exercised and played games in full uniform. The games played were really meaningful, I learnt a lot about teamwork and leadership just through one of the games. Example for the game where a pail of water is placed in the middle of a circle , and we are supposed to get the pail of water out with a few ropes. The difficult part is that 5 people will be blindfolded and they are the only who can touched the rope, the other 3 people will have to give instructions to them. Although during the game, some of the teammates start to get pissed off and wanted to give up, but with some encouragements they still continued with the game. Thus through this game, I learnt how important it is to communicate well with your team mates and how to give instructions clearly. I believe all these are skills we, cadet leaders should have. After our dinner buffet, we continued with the interaction with Flying Eagle Association. We played more games and of course it was really fun. When we got back to the hotel , we had a last debrief where all of us spoke about our thoughts and also we had a last night party with all group mates.

On the seventh day, the last day, we got to decide if we want to sleep more or eat more, we just have to assemble at 9.30 am. It is really sad to remember that it was the last day with all of our new found friends. Sometimes, I hope that there will be flight delay, or a ferry delay. Though all of us were sad, we still greeted each other with a smile. After assembling, we went to catch the morning ferry back to Hong Kong. We were rather early, thus we had to stay for a few hours in the airport. We checked in our luggage and we started moving into the airport for lunch. It was the first time I got to eat fast food thoughout the whole Hong Kong Trip, thus eating the food I miss Singapore a little. Though I still hoped the flight will delay.. as long as possible. But to my disappointment, everything was so smooth, we board the plane at 3 plus. On the plane, we talked to our friends and exchanged contact numbers. The flight seemed so short, we reached Singapore at 8 pm. It was really late so we had a very brief debrief and took a few last pictures before we waved goodbye to each other.

Though when the trip ended no one shed tears but I am very sure all of us will miss this trip. However despite the fact that this trip has ended, I believe the friendship between us will never end. All in all, this trip was still a fun and enriching trip which allowed me to learn a lot more about friendship, leadership, teamwork and of course gain deeper insight about how the Police Force in Hong Kong operates. I really enjoyed and appreciated this trip and I really hope I can take part in similar activities. Lastly, I would say I would really miss the trip!

Reflection on Survival Training Camp (13th Nov - 15th Nov 2009)

Day 1

Once again, its that time of the year, when all the secondary 3 cadets from Area 10 gathers together, and sets off to Camp Resilience for our 3day 2night Survival Training Camp. Upon reaching Changi Jetty, the sirs there split us up into our respective groups and prepared us for Treasure Hunt. Unfortunately, it started raining and we had to cancel the game and just take the boat to Pulau Ubin. When we were at the jetty there, we put on our ponchos and waited for Group 2 to set off together. The route to campsite was long and tiring, but the rain seemed to have blocked out the sunlight and heat, and made things easier, despite drenching parts of our trackpants and also our shoes. Rather quickly, we reached campsite and waited at the foyer for the other groups. The rest of the day passed quickly for all we did was ice breakers and team bonding games. The games were really enjoyable, and I liked my groupmates , especially since a few of them were also in my group in ATC. Through the games, we all got to know each other and memorised each other's names easily. Also, due to the rain, we did not have to pitch up tents for the night and slept at the foyer instead. Though it was good to not have to pitch tents, sleeping in the foyer had a bad point too. It was freezing cold at night, and despite wearing the long sleeves which we had brought along, all of us were still very cold.

Day 2

As usual, today's the day where all the activities takes place. As Secondary 3s, we had to take part in intermediate element course, jetty jump, as well as fire starting and shelter building. Due to my fear of heights as well as lack of time, i did not get to take part in the intermediate element course, but i had the chance to help out by pulling on to the safety ladder while my groupmates attempted the obstacles. It was pretty scary looking at some going through the course for they started shivering and i could feel them shaking since the ladder was attached to the cable they were advancing on. Thus, i feel that those who had tried the course were really brave. After that, we had lunch , which was army rations instead of maggie noodles since we were too lazy to cook them. Then we carried on with jetty jump. For me, it was a really nice experience since it was my first time. I volunteered to go third since i was afraid that the longer i drag the less courage i have to do so. Once on the plank, i realised how high it was and my feet started trembling. This time round, it wasnt really because i was afraid of heights, but more of me being afraid that i will drop down before being prepared and drown to death. Nevertheless, the sir patiently instructed me to take a step forward for easier 'falling'. Then he counted 1,2,3, go. And the next thing i know, i was already down and into the water. Everything happened in a few seconds. I could feel the air pressure around me, and the next moment i was already in water, then i floated up since i was wearing lifevest. That done, i had to swim back to the jetty. After jetty jump, we had fire starting and shelter building. This was a very fun activity, and helped to bond my groupmates as we listened to one another's ideas on what to do. It also gave me a sense of achievement when my group was the first to start fire despite our fire structure being the smallest. Finally, we completed our activities and it was already evening time. Time for campfire. Due to the rain, we could not have our campfire, which was really a pity. Hence, we had to make do with a bunch of candles in the centre of the canteen and some bottle of light sticks. Despite so, the atmosphere was really good, and everyone cheered and had a fun time. Just as we thought that it was the end of the day , our CIs surprised us and planned another activity which was night walk. Though we had to travel through the jungle in groups of 6, it was really safe as there were CIs around us, as well as light sticks showing us the way. Hence, we all completed the walk, safe and sound.

Day 3

As the saying goes, all good things come to an end. Day 3 marked the last day of camp. We had morning PT, like we did in day 2, then we had breakfast and area cleaning, followed by prize giving and finally, break camp.

Throughout the camp, i'm really glad that i have such nice and co-operative groupmates who helped and volunteered to do things for the group.This is really important in life because when we get tired along the way, we need people to motivate us, to give us the strength to continue. With my group, i know that they will motivate me and guide me through during the camp, and help me whenever i'm in need. Also, i felt that the camp this year was not as tough as i'd imagined. In fact, ATC was more challenging last year, compared to STC this year. However, i do feel that this is because of the rain which has caused many activities to be cancelled. Nonetheless, STC was still a nice experience, and has helped to make me more comfortable in getting to know other people,expanding my social circle.

Unit Training Camp 2009 (23rd - 25th October)

On the 23rd - 25th October 2009, AHSNPCC had a Unit Training Camp. It was meant to toughen up our secondary ones and twos, preparing the secondary 2s for their coming ATC. During the camp, the secondary ones and twos drill sessions, campcraft sessions, field cooking, a cheering session, PT sessions, fire drills, a hike and the highlight, a campfire.

The secondary ones and twos were split into different groups consisting of both levels. Their group names were based on the theme - 'Cars'. We had Porsche, Ferrari, Volvo and BWM. Each group had their group flag to represent them.

During the camp, they were told to bring along the flags wherever they go to and they were to show their sense of urgency and their punctuality.

Throughout the camp, perseverance, initiative, discipline and punctuality were shown. The secondary 3s had high expectations of the juniors and they were not disappointed.

After the camp, much was learnt. The secondary 3s felt that the juniors were even better cadets after the camp. They commended the perseverance shown by them. Even though we could all tell that they were really exhausted because of the short sleeping hours and tough trainings, the secondary ones and twos held on.

Heritage Trail - Jointly Organised with Anglican High St. Johns

After many many weeks of planning for a Heritage Trail (mainly for the sec 1 cadets) and collaboration with the Anglican High St John's (SJAB) Sec 3 cadets and our NPCC sec 3 cadets, our Heritage Trail was a very successful event.

The Heritage Trail was organised mainly for the secondary 1 cadets (because our older cadets have been through different Heritage Trails before) to learn more about the landmarks of Singapore around the City Hall area. The event was organised on the 19th September 2009 (Saturday).

The secondary 1 and 2 cadets were grouped into groups, with some cadets from NPCC and some from SJAB. A secondary 2 of each group was made the group leader, who would lead the group to the designated stations. There were a total of 9 groups, with a sec 3 cadet attached as the facilitator for the group. The facilitators were to give the clues to the group (based on their performance for the different stations) and accompany the group throughout the whole Heritage Trail. After the end of year exams, the groups would be required to submit a project that is related to the Heritage Trail.

At different stations (around the City Hall area), there were different games carefully planned by the secondary 3s for the cadets to play. These games tested their teamwork. Even though some of the cadets were very new to each other, they quickly made friends with each other and got along well.

Although there was a heavy rain in the middle of the Trail, every sec 3 was clear on what to do because there was a good wet-weather plan. So, everything was in control.

After every station was completed, all the groups were to meet at the Peranakan Museum, to learn about the Peranakan culture. I believe the trip to the Peranakan Museum was an eye-opener to everyone. Photos were taken along the way and in the museum for their projects.

Then, after the end of everything, we took the bus (hired) back to school. We announced the winner of the day and after photo-taking, we were dismissed.

All in all, the Heritage Trail was a successful one.

Unit CIP: National Day Walk @ Tampines

On the 30th August 2009, AHSNPCC participated in a CIP Project as a unit, collaborting with the Tampines North CC.
The CIP was a National Day walk. Residents of that area participated in it and some of our cadets were to be stationed at certain areas to direct the people and the rest walked alongside with the residents to make sure they stay safe throughout the entire walk.
We started walking from Tampines to Pasir Ris. After the walk, we used our towels given by the organisers to dry ourselves and did some cool down exercises. Afterwards, we went to collect our breakfast with the coupons given by the organisers. We sat along a path as a unit and ate our box of bee hoon.
After everything, we took some pictures and soon, we were dismissed.

Hazel's OBS Reflection (17th - 21st August)

Day 1
The start of OBS
Initially, I felt reluctant to participate. I heard from my friends about outward bound and it left a deep yet unfriendly impression. Nevertheless, being committed to it, I made my way to the pungol jetty. Familiar faces were scarce and for once I regretted taking part in it. People from other Npcc areas, people from Ncc. Basically, we were people from the north, south, east and west of Singapore. Seconds passed like hours and I was all alone with my fellow cadet at the other end of the assembling place. Everyone only exchanged smiles and nothing was spoke. I detested trying to be the first to open up as it was not like me to have broken the ice between the group mates. Finally, I picked up some courage and decided to get the ball rolling. The first step was difficult yet I found it to be fruitful. The first lesson I learn is not to confine myself , as my instructor has said: there is no such things as strangers but these people are just friends which we have not met. However, after trying to engage the two other girls in a conversation, one of the two girls found herself to be in the wrong group and she made a mutual swap with her friend from her unit. Now, I found myself facing a new person and in my heart, I was feeling disappointed as I will have to try to make new friends again. Well, so … before I attempted a conversation, the new girl was already talking to us. I felt very relieved. She was a cheerful and outspoken girl and by the time we reach our base camp, we could talk as if we were close friends. For the first time in a camp, I found myself not restrained by the fact that the other group members were actually foreign to me and I could not share my deepest thoughts with them nor approach them for assistance.
‘toilet’
The next lesson I picked up is to not stay within my comfort zone and have the mentality that I am ungraceful in doing such things in the wilderness. I vividly remember my first “ toilet” incident at our first campsite. We were all compelled to either use the bushes as a shield from the eye of the others or not using the “ toilet”. Although I had been to china for immersion programs , the worse condition I saw was a run down hut with all the wastes around. This time round , the bushes and trees were the only shelter we had. After much internal struggles, I gave in and with the company of the three other female companions, we brushed our teeth in the open.
Day 2
Bonding games
Two hundred seconds – the first game my group (Marco polo) took part as a team. Our first round was a flop, we lost to Columbus as we were not consistent in juggling the ball nor were we efficient in jumping the rope. We delayed ourselves by pinning blames on fellow group members. After the first round, we got the message that we should work as a team and not point fingers at others. For the second and third round, we won Columbus. One thing I think Marco polo did well was we were not defeated by our failures and was not proud to be winning.
High elements
We moved on to high elements section. I think I made a grave mistake at this section, I lost my friend’s trust in me when I belayed her. Both me and my friend who was pulling me down began to float as our weight was not adequate to support her. Fortunately, It was just a trail .We proceeded with the real part. When our group members got up, the others were impatient with those that were on top. I think we should put ourselves in other people’s shoes. Instead of encouraging them on, the people were making unwelcomed remarks. After all of us tried and got the taste of the fear when we were doing the elements.
Day 3
Sea expenditure
I was very grateful to be grouped with two males in this event if not I think I would not have made it to the other shore. The other two group mates were very accommodating and patient with me. As I had never experienced a tri-yart before, I kept hitting the person in front of me with the paddle. For that, I felt rather guilty. I was also thankful that he was forgiving enough. In fact , he did not mention much about it and let the matter rest. I felt worst when I realize that if I were to paddle alone while the two guys rest , the tri-yart would either not move or move backwards. Well, its time I should train my strength. Although I was not of much help or even worse was making things difficult for the two of them, they never really blame me for that.
Day 4
Land expedition
I felt accomplished to have completed the whole expedition. We ( Marco polo) were the first to reach our base camp. The credit goes to the land expedition leaders and not forgetting the others who have participated and pulled through, which actually meant the whole group. If we were not persistent, we would not have made it together. I admired the land expedition leaders as on the surface, the pretended to be not tired and were demanding for us to carry on with short breaks. Without them hurrying us and pushing us on, we would not have finished the expedition so soon. After we reach base camp, one of the leader who was extremely exhausted moved at a slow pace and we were all surprised as we thought he was energetic. He had deceived us with his actions and this is something which I found to be educating. A leader who is leading should never show his exhaustion to his group mates as his liveliness with spur them on but his exhaustion will reduce the morale and negatively alter the mindset of his followers. I am truly impressed and aspire to be like him. Besides praising the leaders, I think the rest of the group mates should also be complimented. Without all of us sharing the load of the tents and other equipments and gadgets it will be hard to have complete this journey smoothly. Furthermore, we all encouraged each other on and regardless of wining or losing we are all winners as we have attained something valuable – friendship. This activity allowed us to bond more as friends who lend a helping hand and share through woes with you is a true friend. I am appreciative of my fellow group mates for aiding me along the way. Without them I might not have been able to endure through this alone. Once again I wish to thank all of the other fifteen members who gave me motivation to move on.
Dinner time
Obviously, I did not do much cooking at home. When we were told to prepare a dinner for our so called enemy Columbus, we proceeded on with the chores. A few of us were cutting the ingredients which consist of corn, mushroom, and fish luncheon. Out of boredom, we challenged each other in terms of cutting skills and gave ourselves time limit to finish cutting the food. In the end, the food was a little out of shape. We boiled a big pot of soup and cooked rice and three other dishes to complement it. We were doing a good job before we heard news that the ‘enemy’ is spinning up some weird dishes for us. Hence we decided to add some ‘ sparkles’ to the food. We crushed a packet of instant noodles and named it the crunchy top. We garnished on top of all the food. Our rice were also salted with the butter we were provided with and a packet of msg. however, we were later told to eat our own food. It was a splendid meal especially the soup which we later named it as the laughing soup. It may be due to our mood though. After consuming the soup, all of us became rather cheerful and even the solemn guy in our group went a little hay wire and started running and shouting around. Personally, I think camp food never tasted so heavenly before as I could feel the warmth contained in it.
Day 5
Cleaning up
In a blink of the eye, we are about to break camp soon. Well, I never find it more enjoyable to clean up. Indeed after the five days we spent, in my opinion, doing chores with one another is not that tiring any longer. I think all of us have in one way or another become more initiative. I remembered what our instructor had said before about us being in stages. The first stage is forming. We will wait for the instructions to be given before we complain and finally go about doing our task. The second stage is to look at the eye of a person and we will automatically go do the job. The last stage is to not even be asked and complete the task. Personally, I think we have attained the last stage.
Conclusion
Camp was never that enjoyable to me. I was taken aback that out of the great load of assigned task, many of which was completed successfully with the other group mates being enthusiastic about it. I take back what I had mention earlier about regretting in participating in Outward Bound. It was definitely worth it as not only did I make new friends I also gain new insights and was taught how to be a better leader through the instructors and even the other group mates. I wish all the Marco polo members to be successful leaders in their various aspects.

Qian Ying's OBS Reflection (17th - 21st August)

Day 1 (17 August 2009)

After we reached the OBS Reception Centre at Punggol Jetty, Hazel (fellow AHNP squadmate) and I were immediately and reluctantly separated into our individual groups. I belonged to Columbus (Group 11) while Hazel went to Marco Polo (Group 12). Fortunately, our groups were side by side so we felt relieved. Next, after the welcome speech, we got to meet our instructors. Cecilia was the instructor for Columbus and we interacted and introduced ourselves. My group consisted of 16 members. Subsequently, we headed off for our campsite at Pulau Ubin and bid Singapore goodbye.
After we alighted from the boat, we gathered at a sheltered area and played some interactive games with my group mates. We mixed around and I felt the ice between each of us slowly melting. Then, we had to delegate roles among ourselves. I self-nominated myself as the Food IC and worked together with Yuzi, who is the other Food IC. Initially, I thought of being a Food IC as a simple task- just distributing rations will do. However, later on I realized that being a Food IC was a lot of responsibility. After our group got the boxes of rations, some of us suggested laying all the food on the bare ground for everyone’s share. We then hastily scattered all the food on the ground. It was a mess. Unexpectedly, it began to pour heavily. All of us were dumbfounded as we were not in shelter! So we immediately moved all the food into the sheltered area nearby with the help of members from other group. I felt disheartened as not only were we badly drenched, but everything was messed up again so we had to start from scratch. Time was ticking and we have not yet distributed the food, eaten our lunch or packed our bag packs. Everyone was anxious but eventually we managed to get everything done, except we were late for 3 hours. In my opinion, we should have foresee the impending rain and distribute the rations in sheltered area instead. Yet, this was a blessing in disguise because our group learnt our lesson and managed to cooperate better later on. Next, we carried our loaded bag packs and walked to our first campsite where we pitched our tents. Unfortunately, our group forgot to bring along the pot that is used for cooking rice so the Store IC s went back to retrieve it. Then we learnt another lesson: To always double-check that we have everything important with us.

Day 2 (18 August 2009)

After we ate our breakfast, we carried our bag packs and together with Marco Polo, we went off to our second campsite. It was a relatively long journey, but we were pleased to say that we managed to reach the campsite early. We put down our heavy bag packs and then went for our 200 seconds challenge. Our opponent was Marco Polo. The challenge comprises of 3 sections. Firstly, our group of 16 members had to stand in a circle. All of us had to hold a ball in our right hand and throw the ball towards the left and concurrently catch the ball thrown to us from right. After 3 attempts of successful catching of balls by everyone without any ball dropping, then we can proceed on to the next section. Next, 14 of us are supposed to stand in a single line while 2 persons will hold each end of the rope. We are supposed to skip together without anyone stepping on the rope or tripping for thrice before we can continue to the next section. Lastly, everyone is supposed to stand in a circle and we are supposed to punch (by slapping hardly) the alphabet and number mats on the ground according to alphabetical then numerical order. Everyone is supposed to punch with their left hands. Furthermore, there should also be no form of verbal communication. Anyone who makes a mistake will cause the entire group to restart again. There is a total of 3 rounds. For the first round, Columbus won Marco Polo, yet both teams did not manage to come under 200 seconds. The winner for second round was Marco Polo and they managed to complete the challenge within 200 seconds while Columbus took over 200 seconds. At the last round, both teams were under 200 seconds and the winner goes to Marco Polo. Despite losing to Marco Polo, yet our team was still happy that we progressed and completed the challenge successfully. After all, it’s the process which counts right?
After the game, we proceeded for the Belay School session. We had a whale of time learning the belay commands and each of us got to try out the roles of Belayer, Climber, rope manager and Anchor man.
During lunch, our group opened up and there were cordial conversations with one another. We asked for the schools we came from and then we even promised to add each other in Face Book after the course!
Next, we went for our High Rope Element course which is on the Indiana Jones Ship structure. It appeared intimidating and I concede that I was very frightened initially. For our group, we had to complete a challenge assigned by Cecilia which is to attain a total of 140 points within 1 hour. For each person who completes the lower rope element, it will be 8 points. For each person who completes the highest rope element, it will be 10points. Our group was determined and accepted the challenge readily. When it was finally my turn, I mustered up all the courage left inside of me and trembled as I climbed up the ladder. I went for the Highest Rope Element. It was really tiring to climb up the quaking and unstable rope ladder. When I finally reached half of it, I felt myself drained of energy. It was then when I heard my group mates cheering for me below. Recharged with determination, I climbed the ladder even faster and managed to reach the platform. This was where my real terror began. I am supposed to walk on wooden platforms without any railings to support me. It is really a matter of trust between me and the belayer team. I took in a deep breath and walked the wooden platforms quicker than I could have ever imagined. As I reached the other side, I felt a lurch of triumph! I made it and managed to conquer my fear! I felt a strong sense of accomplishment and I am really grateful for my group mates who cheered me on and boosted my morale. Ultimately, we managed to meet our target and everyone was on cloud nine.
Then we pitched our tents and Cecilia taught us how to cook rice for dinner. It was delicious!

Day 3 (19 August 2009)

In the morning, we took our bags to the concourse area where we played our 200seconds challenge. We took out our life vests and had breakfast as we would be having Sea Expedition later on. I was anticipating it as we would be kayaking for a total of 7 hours! After which, our Sea Expedition leaders (2 from each group of Marco Polo, Columbus and Cheng Ho) briefed us on the journey we are going to take and some of the safety precautions. As we will be travelling with Cheng Ho and Marco Polo, the instructors planned some ice-breaking games for us to know each other better. The games were very interactive and interesting and managed to lighten my spirits. Next, we had a basic kayaking teaching session for some of us who have not learnt how to kayak yet. The instructors also equipped us on some basic kayaking commands such as lifting up the paddle on top of head means to signal people in front to slow down. We had a capsize drill session afterwards with our tri-yak mates. In my tri-yak sits Marcus, Ravi and I. During the capsize drill, I had a little difficulty pulling myself up from the water but Ravi and Marcus aided me and pulled me up from the water. Unfortunately, our boat capsized twice because when Ravi tried to climb onto the tri-yak, the tri-yak was unable to support his weight so we all capsized again. It was a fun experience though.
After our lunch, we headed out to sea in our tri-yaks. All 3 groups had to stay in a diamond shape while kayaking in the sea. It was hard to keep to the shape so eventually everyone just kayaked individually. On the way, my tri-yak mates entertained me and we joked around to relieve the exhaustion from kayaking. It was no doubt physically demanding but as the saying goes “time flies when you are having fun”! Unexpectedly, we managed to reach our destination quickly and the instructors were so impressed they issued us another challenge which is to kayak another round back to this destination but we have to stay in diamond shape as well as everyone has to kayak in cohesion. This means that everyone has to paddle left when the timing is left. The challenge seems impossible since everyone was already beat. Then we motivated each other constantly and persevered, so another mission possible!
After reaching our destination, we pulled our tri-yaks up ashore and pitched our tents near the beach shore. The cool sea breeze was soothing and our team stayed up late in the night to chat while enjoying it. We also had a mini-briefing session for our Land Expedition next day.

Day 4 (20 August 2009)

This OBS course is finally nearing to the end. Everyone is feeling very unwilling to leave as we have stayed with each other for 4 days, through thick and thin. Therefore, we decided to make this final expedition a successful one! After breakfast, Marco Polo, Cheng Ho and Columbus gathered together to play ice breaking games again. It was enjoyable and laughter filled the air! Later, we were separated back into our individual groups and planned on the routes with the map provided. This Land Expedition was supposed to be a competition between the 3 groups. The winner gets to reach the campsite first so they will apparently get the most rest. After plotting the check points on our map, we followed our navigator and set off. According to Cecilia, our group’s first check point is the furthest so we have to work harder in order to get to it. We made a few mistakes here and there such as taking the wrong path. Despite so, we sang cheers and motivated one another during the arduous journey. We were anxious as we had been walking for more than 30 minutes yet we have not reached our first destination. We felt dejected and disheartened but we endured and encouraged each other. Finally, we reached our first check point. The following check points were also found easily. When we reached the 3rd check point, Cecilia led us up the peak of pulau ubin! Then she told us about the story of the egg, carrot and coffee bean. The story goes like this: A famous chef cooks a pot of boiling water. Then he placed an egg, a carrot and coffee beans into it. After a few minutes, he realized that the egg turned hard-boiled while its contents were initially watery. The carrot turned soft after cooking but it was initially rigid and hard. The coffee bean turned the surrounding water brown and let off a rich, fragrant coffee aroma. Cecilia asked us which one do we want to be- an egg, a carrot or a coffee bean. We were supposed to shout out our answers as we stand at the cliff of the peak. The water beneath was crystal clear and beautiful. I shouted “I want to be an egg!” then I was asked to keep shouting until an echo was heard. Everyone had fun and the scenery was awesome! After everyone had a turn, we proceeded to the next check point. Then we accepted the challenge which is for 10 people to be blindfolded. They are supposed to pitch 2 tents within 30 minutes while the rest of 6 people are supposed to guide them along verbally. Everyone cooperated well and we made it! Then we kept the tents and moved on. When we finally reached the campsite, everyone heaved a sigh of relief and we were ecstatic because we were the second to reach the campsite. The first to reach was Marco Polo. At night, we had celebration dinner and cooked our last meal together with Marco Polo. It was a memorable experience and I feel my physical and mental endurance level improving.

Day 5 (21 August 2009)

Today marks the last day of this meaningful OBS Course. We had area cleaning and each of us managed to help out so we completed it quickly. Then we received our certificate and shook hands with each other as well as exchanged contacts. I can never say how much I have learnt during this OBS course and it’s a feeling beyond words can elucidate. Through these 5 days, I believe I have matured greatly and became a stronger person. Nothing is impossible because all you need is courage, strength and encouragement. Thank you, Columbus. Thank you all for making my OBS Course so unforgettable.
Indeed, there is something about OBS that stays with you for life 

YMCA CIP (8th & 9th August 2009)

On the 8th and 9th August 2009 (Saturday & Sunday), our Secondary 3 cadets worked with some of the Secondary 3 NCC(Land) cadets of Anglican High for a fund-raising event for YMCA Singapore.

The event was held at the linkway between Tampines Mall and Century Square for 10am to 6pm. They sold balloon sculptures and little cards. A lot of effort was put into this event.

On the first day, it was sort of a warm-up session for us as it was the first fund-raising event that AHSNPCC has organised. And it was also the first day that some of our cadets actually talked to some of the NCC cadets. As time passed, we got to know each other better and we helped each other in doing the balloon sculpting. For example, a flower would need a stalk and a petal, thus, we would help each other to complete either part. Hence, it was great teamwork amongst the two CCAs. We went in little groups for lunch as manpower would be a problem if too many people went for lunch at one time.
At the end of Day 1, we earned quite a huge sum that was really heartening to all of us who have worked hard.

The second day was very much the same, just that the crowd flow was rather different from the first day. We saw a greater crowd on the first day than compared to the second day. Hence, our spirits got a little dampened but we managed to persevere and believed in ourselves. And we actually did it! :D We sold all the items even before the stipulated time.

After that, we packed up the area and had a debrief by our facilitator, Nick. We did a survey and after a bit of talk here and there, we were dismissed. The event was very very successful.

All in all, the event was a meaningful and fun one. I'd like to take this opportunity, on behalf of the Secondary 3 cadets, to thank the facilitator, Nick, for the help you've given us, our proposals and the actual day and stuff like that. And also, thank you NCC cadets for taking time to come down and help us make this event successful.

Leadership and Mentoring Skills Course

On the 18th and 19th of June (Thursday and Friday), our secondary 3 cadets went for their LMSC (Leadership and Mentoring Skills Course) in their full NPCC uniform for day one and their PT kit for day two.

Day one:
Our cadets were split into different squads. As the total strength for our secondary 3 cadets is 12, a few of our cadets had to be alone in their squads consisting of cadets from other schools.
The cadets who had to be alone in their new squads were nervous but were yet eager to find out who were in their squad. Then, many saw familiar faces from other units.

After all the units arrived, cadets were seated according to their squads and the day commenced. Cadets had lectures on MOI and Leadership. Our cadets got a better idea on how to conduct lectures, campcraft and drill sessions to their juniors. They also got to know more about themselves through the DISC profiling. They learnt about the different leadership styles and how they could work better with their squadmates.

The day ended and our cadets were already very attached to their new found friends from the other NPCC units. A day well spent making friends and learning new things.

It was a really fruitful day.

Day two:
Our cadets reported and once again after all the NPCC units arrived, lectures started.
Lectures on Effective Communication and Team Building. There was a video about geese that was really inspiring. Our cadets got to know their new friends even better and were even closer.

Cadets learnt about learning styles and the undisputed laws of teamwork which were important for them as CLs (Cadet Leaders). Knowing the different types of learning styles would help our CLs to know how to pass on knowledge to their juniors in ways they would learn best so as to have effective communication. Undisputed laws of teamwork would help our CLs to work better with their fellow batch mates. The video about geese was inspiring and taught our cadets a lot.

Then came the Team Building games :D
All of the cadets were very excited and hyped up. All of them worked well together will their squads and learnt a lot from each other through the games. They learnt a lot about how teamwork would help them overcome obstacles. Through the games, cadets bonded with their fellow squadmates and had lots of fun.

After all of the games, it was debrief and then the end of the whole 2 day course. Cadets passed around contact lists of emails to keep in touch with each other after the course. Our cadets were reluctant to part with their new found friends. Its amazing how cadets can come together for 2 days and become close friends. It'll be great if there were to be more of such courses that can allow cadets to come together to interact and learn about each other and their units.

We really appreciate the effort the HOs and CIs put in for this course. A big thank you to all of you. (:

PYA Project

On 15th June 2009 (Monday), our Secondary 3 cadets went to Bedok Central to do their PYA project. They collaborated with the Bedok North NPC.

Our cadets were to spread crime prevention messages to the shopkeepers in that area and the residents who were there at Bedok Central as the GSS period is here. Our cadets were worried about being ignored by the residents around that area when they want to convey crime prevention messages. They were also nervous and scared about being tongue-tied.

When they started approaching the residents and shopkeepers, it proved otherwise. The residents were willing to listen to the crime prevention messages and they browsed through the pamphlets given out to them. Some were even asking questions about what they can do to prevent crime in other areas. Although there were also residents who ignored our cadets and hurried away, our cadets did not give up.

Through this, we found out that a cadet, CPL Jolene Ng was a really confident speaker, although during trainings, she's somewhat quiet at times. Our cadets got better self-confidence after this and they themselves also took home the crime prevention messages with them to spread to their families.

We feel that it was a really meaningful thing to do as we helped to spread these messages that could deter crimes.

After a long day, our TO, Miss Lim bought us a drink each to quench our thirst :D

All in all, we enjoyed the event and learnt a lot from the event too (: Now, let's let the photos do the talking! :D

Land Division Bedok Police HQ Visit

On Friday, 29th May 2009, our Secondary 3 cadets went for their Land Division Bedok Police HQ Visit. SGT Alicia Wee, SGT Guo Jun Ting, SGT Hazel Tan, SGT Jacinth Chua, SGT Eunice Tan, SGT Pearlyn Yeo, SGT Sarah Teo, SGT Yan Qian Ying, SGT Valerie Lim, SGT Mandy Lee and CPL Jolene Ng were present for the visit. We had the visit along with our Bedok Green Secondary School fellow Area Mates (:

Our 'tour guide' for our cadets' visit was Staff Jimmy. He gave us a lot of information about what the police do and the items a police carries while going on patrol. We had chances at getting a closer look at the T-baton, the handcuffs, the revolver the police use.

After the introduction and brief explanations on the different things related to the police, we had a mini-quiz. After the quiz, we had a short tour around the Bedok Police HQ. We saw the armoury, and the different rooms specified for different officers. We also saw the vehicles the police use for patrol, escorting and controlling traffic purposes.

After that, we were dismissed. Let's let the photos we took do the talking :D

Passing Out Parade

On the 22nd April 2009, our growing unit commemorated our second Passing Out Parade and farewell party, as our secondary 4 seniors will have to concentrate on their upcoming O-levels. It was a memorable day, as memories flooded our hearts.

We had the passing out parade followed by a muster parade. Afterwhich, we changed to our PT kit and proceeded to the Audio Visual Theatre for our farewell party. The farewell party started with a speech from our teacher-in-charge, Mrs Yip.

Next, our secondary ones acted out a skit which was really interesting. Afterwhich, it was followed by speeches from a few of our secondary one cadets thanking our secondary 4 seniors. Then, our secondary 2s had a gameshow for the secondary fours. It was meticulously done and they had signs that asked the audience to clap or jeer. It was really fun and memorable. Again, a few of our secondary 2 cadets expressed their gratitude to the seniors.

Of course, the following performance was by the secondary 3s. They danced to the song 'Just Dance' by Lady Gaga. Their dance was captivating and enjoyable. Lots of time and hardwork were put in it. After that, a few of our secondary 3 cadets made their speech, thanking the seniors and giving them assurance that they'll bring the unit to greater heights. Next, it was the secondary 4s performance. It was creative and fun. They presented skits of twisted fairytales which enthralled the audience. They had props which were carefully made. It was a really enjoyable and funny performance.

After that, the 4 seniors made their speeches. Tears fell like the rain, non-stop. They told each squad about their performances the past few months and the fun they had with each other. Then came speeches for each other, the squadmates they hold dear. Almost everyone started crying.

After that, its was presents time. The seniors gave cards to their juniors and the juniors had cards for them too. Then we had a pizza treat from our teachers-in-charge.

Afterwhich, cadets left for home. We could never forget the support and the hard work our seniors had given us. Thank you seniors!

NPCC Annual Parade 2009

On Saturday, 18th April 2009, 4 Secondary 3 cadets, SGT Hazel Tan, SGT Jolene Neo, SGT Jacinth Chua and SGT Eunice Tan, along with 3 other Secondary 2 cadets, LCP Kimberly Tan, LCP See Ying Ling and LCP Tan Mei Ting, participated in the NPCC Annual Parade 2009.

After weeks of training with cadets from other units, forging great friendships and gaining new experiences, the day finally came for the cadets to show their worth. The parade was a really spectacular one, with many families and friends of participating cadets going down to Home Team Academy to give them their fullest support. Many cadet spectators from units all over Singapore also made a trip down in their full-uniform to support their fellow CCA mates.

There were many contingents, consisting of cadets from different areas. There were the Flag Contingents, the Guard-Of-Honour Contingent and the Supporting Contingents. Even though the parade lasted for a rather long period of time, the cadets persevered through and put in their very best for the parade.

After the parade ended, there was a series of performances put up by cadets from other units. The performances were great and all the spectators could tell the amount of effort and time put in to present the performance.

After all the official closing of the parade, cadet spectators were allowed to take photos with the participating cadets. They sure are proud of the wonderful performance put up by their fellow CCA-mates.

All in all, the NPCC Annual Parade 2009 was a really successful one.

Inter-Area Games Day.

On Saturday, 4th April 2009, 6 Sec 3 cadets took part in the Inter-Area Games Day held at Temasek Secondary School. The competition is a combined effort of all the Area 10 schools. Other than the nine Area 10 schools, Holy Innocents' High School NPCC Unit was also invited to join in the fun.

The theme for this year's Inter-Area Games Day was "Modified Sports". Every Area 10 unit came up with their new versions of games, such as "Captain Sponge", which is created by our own unit cadets. It is modified from Captain's Ball, such that a sponge with water is used instead of a ball. When a goal is scored, the water in the sponge would be squeezed into the pail, and the team with the more amount of water would win the game.

There were 3 game masters, namely SSGT Rachel Yong, CPL Valerie Lim and LCP Quek Li Xin. They were mainly in charge of briefing the participants on the game details, and ensuring that the game is played safely.

After a morning of wet and dry games, our representatives, CPL Yan Qian Ying, CPL Alicia Wee, CPL Guo Jun Ting, CPL Mandy Lee, CPL Pearlyn Yeo, CPL Sarah Teo came in champion for the Soccer competition held by Bedok Green Secondary School. Congratulations!

NUS NPCC .177 Air Rifle Shooting Championships 2009

On Saturday, 28th March 2009, 8 AHNPCC cadets took part on the annual NUS air rifle competition. The competition, which is organized by NUS NPCC, is a prestigious competition involving more than 20 secondary schools. There were two teams representing Anglican High; Team 1 comprising of SSGT Yohana Cahyana, SSGT Rachel Yong, SSGT Vivien Tan and SSGT Er Weiting (Reserve); and Team 2 comprising of CPL Jacinth Chua, CPL Alicia Wee, CPL Pearlyn Yeo and CPL Eunice Tan(Reserve).

We arrived at Home Team NS on 11 a.m., signed up at the registration booth and entered the shooting arena. It was detail 3's turn. We watched them as we looked for a space to wait for our turn. Most of the cadets were nervous and overwrought from the pressure that engulfs the area.

The competition requires shooting 20 shots within 40 minutes. We were given 11 target cards, 1 for sighting and 10 for shooting. Each card can only hold 2 shots. Soon, the chief range officer announced the five minutes preparation time, where shooters are allowed to shoot dry shots on their target cards. Live firing was not allowed at this point of time. Then, a "Start" command was given and shooters started to shoot. Cadets struggled to maintain their cool under the pressure, trying their best to shoot well.

After the competition, we went out to have lunch. We were back 2 hours later for the prize presentation ceremony, the long awaited climax of the event. The results were announced. We were ecstatic to discover that Team 1 succeeded in clenching the 1st runner-up for team category, while SSGT Rachel obtained the 1st Runner-up for the Individual category. Our CI, Wan Ling Ma’am also managed to acquire the 2nd Runner up for the Officer’s Individual Category. The other team, Team 2 had also done well, acquiring the 3rd Runner-up for Team Category. Overall, all of our cadets had done exceptionally well as we are at the top 5 for team category and top 20 for the individual category.

It was a job well done for all. Keep up the good work and let’s soar up to greater heights!

High Rope Challenge HRC

On Saturday morning, 7th march 2009, the four Secondary 4 Anglican High NPCC cadets met up at Changi Jetty. Accompanied by Ms Fadzhilla, our officer in charge, we rode a bumboat to Pulau Ubin. The Secondary 4s would be attending the High Rope Challenge, a compulsory activity for all Secondary 4 cadets.

The High Rope Challenge consisted of 5 elements, namely Advanced Rope Challenge, The Tunnel, Dangling Duo, Flying Fox and the Leap of Faith. As the activity’s title suggests, the activities we are about to face at Pulau Ubin would definitely prove a challenge. It is certainly more challenging for those who are afraid of heights.

We started with the dangling duo. In this challenge, 2 cadets were to pair up together and help each other to climb up 5 dangling bars of logs. It was a difficult challenge designed to let cadets co-operate with each other in order to reach the top. SSGT Weiting and Vivien-pair managed to climb up to the 3rd bar, but among SSGT Rachel and Yohana-pair, only SSGT Rachel managed to climb up to the third pole.

Next, we attempted the flying fox. The main difficulty of this challenge was the climbing up of the stairs before descending. We had to climb up a flight of stairs that lead us up to nearly 5 stories high. Of course, after all the trouble of climbing, the fun and joy awaits. It was an exciting and exhilarating experience for us all, including Ms Fadzhilla who joined us as an exclusive guest.

The third challenge we faced is the Advanced Rope Challenge. It was an extremely difficult task which requires stability, courage and strength. SSGT Yohana tried first, but was not successful and had to return back, without even reaching the mid-point of the challenge. SSGT Vivien tried next, and among the Secondary 4 cadets, she was the only one who managed to finish the task. Then, due to the deteriorating weather, all activities have to be stopped.

Afterwards, the weather worsened considerably. As there were no signs that the rain would stop anytime soon, we were released early. It was a mixture of relief and disappointment for us as we were not able to finish the other two challenges, the Tunnel and the Leap of Faith.

This event had trained us physically and mentally, teaching us to support each other in time of need and facing difficult tasks with a definite amount of composure.

Initiation Day

The Secondary 3 cadets have worked hard in preparation for the Initiation day which was held last Friday, 23th January 2009. The objective for this event is to welcome the new Secondary Ones into our family and let them familiarize themselves with the unit’s values. The cadets were divided into 4 groups, namely Group 1, 2 , 3 and 4.

We begin the event with an introduction from everyone. Cadets must state their name, class and previous primary schools. There was a big round of applause coming from the seniors whenever there were Secondary Ones from their previous primary school. The introduction was filled with heart-warming welcome and cheering for the Secondary Ones. The introduction was then followed by an ice-breaking game named “Poncho Frenzy”.

Next, we played the game “Murder Case Hunt”. Each groups have to solve a murder case with the help of clues. The clues, however, must be obtained by completing a task from 8 stations. The first one to complete the task won the game. Each station comprises of a unique game full of fun and tactics.

In the end, Group 3 won the event. Although the majority of us did not win the game, we have learnt how to co-operate and synchronize with each other through each task from every station, while, at the same time, get to know each other better. It was indeed a memorable and fun-filled day for every one of us.

CCA Selection Day

Secondary Ones briefing

It was the day for Secondary One students to select the CCA of their own choice. The selection includes 5 rounds of CCA selection. Secondary One students were to queue and register in the CCA of their choice within 10 minutes in each round.

Before 14 00 hours, each and every CCA assembled at the hall. The CCA teacher in charge started with a long briefing for the Secondary Ones, while we sat, waiting. No doubt, a large part of us felt that there were little chances of us reaching the quota of 22, due to the fact that we have all a long been a small unit.

Finally, the first round begins. To our dismay, only 3 students turned up at our booth. All we could see was long queues at other booths. We were dejected, yet the feeling of disappointment never did once defeat the heart of wanting to do the best for the family. We tried hard promoting our CCA to the Secondary Ones.

And there was a miracle. At the end of the 5th round, AHSNPCC concluded the event with 17 intakes. It was the perseverance and the hard work of every member in the unit that showed this result. Although we did not reach our quota of 22 cadets, the intakes we acquired was 5 more than last year's. It was a great improvement for our unit. Let us soar higher to the sky!

Secondary One Orientation Performance

As to what the wise man says, time flies like an arrow. At a glance, our unit has stepped into its fifth year, marking its start with the orientation of the new batch of secondary ones. The orientation performance took part last Friday, 9 January 2009.

Our cadets have spent much of their holidays preparing for this important day. We trained under the sun continuously throughout the day, perfecting our drills for this important day. The Secondary 3 cadets were in charge of the foot drills, and they have chosen the song “Disturbia” by Rihanna to accompany their creative foot drills. As for the Secondary 4 cadets, Mervyn Sir, our Honorary Officer, had created a Precision Drill accompanied by the song “Numb”, sung by Linking Park.

In preparation for the display for the orientation day, our newly appointed Cadet Inspectors, Wanling Ma’am and Li Jing Ma’am, worked their best to create a ‘Gateway’. This magnificent structure was built by our two Ma’ams and 4 other CIs, who were gracious enough to help us in time of need.

At last, the big day came. Our foot drill team was splendid, everyone looking smart and disciplined, doing the best of their ability in order to impress the new Secondary One students. The Precision Drill Squad had also done a fabulous job, spinning the rifle accurately and performing domino sequences flawlessly. We were all eager to display our hard work and efforts, putting every experience and training we have gained into the few minutes of our performance.

There were altogether two shifts prepared for us to exhibit our drills. Our booth was round shaped, symbolizing the united spirit of our unit. Right in the middle of the circle, we proudly displayed various medals and trophies we had won from different competitions since the founding of our unit. Our pictures, rifles, batons, first-aid kit and even our raft were included in the limelight!

Although in the second shift there was a slight technical problem with the sound system which caused our music to stop suddenly right in the middle, we managed to perform marvelously until the end of the drill. We were extremely disappointed, as without the music, the drills will not leave a deep impression on the Secondary Ones. Fortunately, the teacher in charge of the performances agreed to let us perform the second time, complete with the music.

Overall, it was a very good job performed by the Precision Drill Team and the Fancy Foot Drill team. Although the Secondary One CCA Orientation result is not out yet, I believe we will yield a grand intake of Secondary Ones this year. Let the eagles in AHSNPCC soar to greater heights!

SSA Camp 2008

On the 19th November 2008, 3 of our cadets from our Secondary 3 squad as well as 4 NCOs trudged down to Changi Camelot Campsite for our yearly Safety & Security Ambassador camp, organised by Bedok NPC. Lugging our heavy backpacks, it was the first time the Secondary threes are embarking on a camp with a crime prevention module while for the NCOs a camp they were coming back for as a facilitator.

Combined with several other Uniformed Groups from other schools in Bedok, the selected few were either handpicked by their teachers or nominated by their fellow squadmates to attend this camp. The 3 day 2 night camp instills the cadets with sufficient knowledge of crime prevention tips which they will use to educate the public on the last day of the camp.

In the event of the camp, cadets were exposed to high elements such as flying fox. It was a test for courage and strength within the cadets. Cadets also get to build their own rafts which they have to test out to sea for its functionality. This activity illuminates the teamwork between the groups, as well as their time management within the stipulated time to finish their task.

Facilitators.

Besides outdoor activities, cadets also have theory lessons on crime prevention and first aid. Pointers on common crimes and actions were highlighted to them so that they could pass on the message of crime prevention to the public. The respective groups would also pick a specific topic and create posters and images to educate the public on the last day.

On the last day, cadets were brought down to Bedok Interchange. Each group were stationed to a specific area to educate the public. For example: A group can be put to disseminate car theft flyers on the windscreen of cars or go shop to shop, educating the shopkeepers on how to prevent robbery.

The Passing Out Parade marks an emotional end to the entire camp as cadets had their last meal together in the camp. The best camper as well as best group were also announced prior to the giving out of certificates to all participants.

Many of the campers were still keeping in touch after the camp. It was an unforgettable and fruitful experience for both campers and faciliators, as this camp instills a sense of vigilance and awareness in each of us.

Flag Day

8th November 2008, the entire unit of AHS NPCC travelled down to Far East Plaza, spirits up & ready to play her part in charity. This time round, the flock participated, together with many other schools, to raise funds for the Children's Society. At the meeting point, our AHS NPCC queued up to register as well as collect the donation cans. Grasping the stickers tightly, everyone began to hype up for yet another amazing experience with AHS NPCC.

As we were given two designated locations to serve, we split up into two groups, one going to Clarke Quay and another to Chinatown. With two popular places at hands, we were confident in raising a relatively large sum of money for the Children's Society.

With each group splitting up into yet smaller groups, we covered the entire vicinity and asked relentlessly for donations from people from all walks of life. Despite many rejections, we still managed to raise quite a sum of money, complimenting the effort we put in.

To every individual taking part in Flag Day, bear in mind that it is not the CIP points that we yearn to obtain, but the realisation of kindness and compassion in people we ought to appreciate. This once in a blue moon voluntary work serves as a reminder to all of us to always remember the needy people around us, and help them to our utmost ability.

Adventure Training Camp

The annual or rather, long-awaited Adventure Training Camp were held on 25th October 2008 to the 27th October 2008, at Pulau Ubin. Our camp began, with our trip to the Changi Jetty at 12pm on the 25th of October, and ended when we were dismissed at 3pm, 27th October.

The camp itself was full of hidden surprises, which took us aback at first. What was thought of as yet another boring camp, chock-full of scoldings and pumping, came about as being pleasantly enjoyable, with us making lots of new friends in the process.

The very first day, our hearts pumped with trepidation as we sat on the rumbling jetty. As the distance between us and Pulau Ubin got nearer, thousands of questions started filling up our minds, in anticipation for the upcoming camp.

Soon, we reached the Pulau Ubin Jetty point and made our way along the stone pathway, where our campsite was going to be. It was a long and arduous journey, fraught with steep slopes and slippery roads. Persevering on, we soon reached the campsite, and were told to place our bags down. We were then divided into separate groups and proceeded to set up our tents respectively. By the time we were done, it was almost dinner-time, which was when we started collecting our dry rations and cooking food. At night, we played ice-breaker games, which was awfully hilarious and afterwards, we had a debrief session. We ended up sleeping in the canteen, due to safety reasons, and thus the first day ended.

The second day was unofficially “lots-of-activity” day. All groups were to rotate between three activities, Kayaking, Road expedition and Low Ropes. After breakfast, we immediately changed and started on our activities. All in all, although the activities were indeed tiring, they were extremely fun, and we enjoyed them immensely. We were given time to prepare for our Campfire night performance, which had the title: FASHION. Each group presented their very own design for FASHION, which was unique in their own special way. The night was filled with laughter and joy as we sang countless numbers of Campfire songs, cheered for the performers and joked with our fellow NPCC cadets. After that, we washed up and went straight to dreamland. Everyone was indeed “shagged” to the bone.

Third Day. Early in the morning we had a morning workout session, which was as physically strenuous as its name implies. After that brain-stimulating workout, we had our breakfast and played some games after that. Of course, no training camp is without its cleaning up session. We picked up the brooms, mops, rags, etc and started clearing up all the places that we have been. Time flew, and soon we were all seated together to listen to the results of the many prizes won by the different groups. As a keepsake, the many I/Cs took photographs with us and we were then dismissed.

Us, the AHS NPCC girls, walked all the way back to the Pulau Ubin jetty, which I must say, was quite a mean feat. Taking the jetty back, we were soon back to Singapore and our comfortable homes.

ATC may be a camp that is both physically and mentally demanding, but through it, we learnt the importance of teamwork and friendship, as well as moral issues such as responsibility. After ATC, I strongly deem that I have grown maturely not as person, but in my thinking. The others,too,feel the same way, I suppose. In conclusion, ATC is indeed the best camp one can go to.

Annual Camp

Our unit started its annual 3 day 2 night camp on September 1 to September 3 2008, at Anglican High School. Following the annual camp tradition in our unit, all cadets were divided into three different groups. Each group was to choose a name, invent a cheer and create a flag to represent the uniqueness of each group. The Secondary Ones were only involved in the first day, due to the lack of manpower.

Based on the theme ‘Planets’, the Secondary Two cadets named their groups ‘Mars’, ‘Venus’ and ‘Saturn’ respectively. SGT Yohana was in charge of ‘Mars’, while SGT Vivien in charge of ‘Venus’ and SGT Weiting in charge of ‘Saturn’.

The 1st day involves started with flag raising and checking of bags. The cadets then proceed to clear the classroom tables and chairs, leaving their bags in the classroom. The day progressed with the preparation of Secondary One Orientation Performance 2009 and pitching of tents.

The 2nd day was expected to be the most tiring day. After a simple outdoor cooking for breakfast, the unit gathered to start their hike. The hike was approximately 8 kilometers long, mainly revolving around Bedok Reservoir and walking back to school. Upon arriving in school, we start lunch immediately. Everyone seems to be famished, gulping down all food offered. The day progressed on with the teachings of cheers and songs, and the long-awaited performance night.

The performance night was full of glee and laughter, everyone enjoying the comical performances put up by the Secondary Twos. There were some games involved, such as ‘mambo’ and ‘truth or dare’. As always, the losers have to do a forfeit; which was very likely to be something embarrassing.

The 3rd day; the final day of our unit camp. We start off the day with unpitching and washing of the tents, followed by area cleaning. When all have finished their chores, the Secondary Twos were seated together to listen to the results of the prize presentation. Clenching the best group award was ‘Mars’, with their disciplined and refined attitude throughout the camp. The Most Improved Cadet award went to Jolene Ng, as she showed her perseverance and anticipation at all times. The Most Initiative Cadet went to Eunice, for her initiative to work behind the scenes and sacrificed herself for the interest of her group. Last but definitely not the least, Guo Junting won the Overall Best Camper, with her positive, determined and disciplined attitude.

The results have shown that all cadets had put in a lot of effort in improving their attitude and conduct with each passing day of the camp. I believe everyone had gained valuable experiences throughout the camp and is now ready to face the Adventure Training Camp in October.

National Day Parade 2008

On 08/08/08, Anglican High School held our annual National Day Parade (school based). It was indeed a remarkable event. All of the 7 Uniform Groups, namely NPCC, NCC, Boys Brigade, Girls Brigade, Scouts, Guides and Saint John's Ambulance Brigade gathered together early in the morning, hearts trepidating in aticipation for the parade. We were ready to march off. The contingents, NPCC being the first contingent, marched down the hill to the parade square upon the command from the 2 I/C from Girl Guides.

The strong drum beats from our very own concert band kept us all neatly together, everyone marching in the same beat. Left, right, left, right, left, right, left... It was then the handing over of the 2 I/C to the parade commander from Scouts. His thunderous commands silence the whole parade. We took dressing and stayed in at east. It was the welcoming of the Guest of Honour (GOH) into the parade. The parade commanders as well as contingent commanders saluted upon the arrival of the GOH. We welcomed the flag party which consisted of representatives from the various Uniform Groups, our's being SSGT Vivien Tan.

Then, we sang our national anthem and took our pledge in Malay together. All the uniform groups in Anglican High School had spent the time and effort to memorise the malay pledge, so as to showcase their national pride on NDP. The feeling of unity overwhelmed all of us. Next, we sang various songs from the collection, such as Home, etc. The melodious voices of the choir took us through all the songs. Next, we recited the recollection led by Cornelius Koshy and Cheryl Liew, students chosen to recite the recollection.

Finally, it was time to march off the parade. The march off was led by the parade commander, followed by flag party. NPCC, led by SSGT Er Wei Ting and SSGT Rachel Yong, was the first contingent to march off. As we showed respect to the Guest Of Honour, a sense of pride and a sense of unrest, especially to the secondary 3 cadets, surged through us. This would be the last National Day Parade the Secondary 3 cadets would be participating and they want to do their best for the parade, for the CCA, as well as the Nation.

Our efforts were paid off upon the compliment from the teacher in-charge that this year was one of the most successful parade in history. National Day Parade was one of the most memorable event in a cadet's life. It was the only time where every Uniform Group work together, showcasing their discipline and pride for the nation, for the same purpose. This memorable experience will be etched in each of our hearts.

Singapore Youth Festival Opening Ceremony

In commemoration of the bi-annual Singapore Youth Festival, SGT Rachel Yong and SGT Yohana Cahyana signed up for the Singapore Youth Festival Opening Ceremony (SYFOC). Although the actual opening ceremony was held on 27th June, the trainings in preparation for the event had started on early May. Students from various uniformed groups and CCAs have trained diligently in order to put up their best performance on the memorable SYFOC.

The NPCC and NCC cadets were chosen to be the Guards of Honour (GOH). It was a privilege to us as the uniformed groups that functions under the government. There were a total of 4 contingents, NPCC Girls, NPCC Boys, NCC Girls and NCC Boys.

Although the rehearsals were tiring and exhausting, all those hard work had certainly paid off in the SYFOC. We were bestowed the chance to wear the GOH uniformed and a chance to meet a renowned Minister of Education. It was an unforgettable experience to be able to stand in front of the crowd as a representative for our very own nation, Singapore.

.22 Preliminary Shoot

Last Tuesday, our unit participated in the .22 Revolver Preliminary Shooting Competition. The cadets present were SI Michelle, SI Wan Ling, SSGT Sheena, SSGT Ashley, SSGT Megan, SSGT Jiamin, SGT Rachel, SGT Weiting, SGT Vivien and SGT Yohana. We assembled at 11.50 am in school and proceeded to the Home Team Academy shortly after, accompanied by our OC, Ms Aline Poh and our 2 instructors, Mervyn Sir and Peiyi Ma'am.

Upon our arrival in the Home Team Academy, we were asked to mark our attendance and was ushered to the waiting room. The waiting room allows us to watch how shooters from other schools shoot and the procedure of the shooting compeetition. We were at the least nervous and were chatting enthusiastically while waiting for our turn.

Soon, our school name was called and we proceeded to a room for a short briefing for the competition. The FI in charge of explaining the safety precautions and the procedure of the competition is FI Dominic, a close friend of our OC, Ms Aline Poh. He was very hospitable and he motivated us to do our best in this competition.

Sadly, at the end, we did not perform as well as what have been expected of us. In order to meet the required time limit, some did not aim properly or focus on the target. Some were too nervous to put in their best. Many cried, disappointed for their own underperformance.

This competition have thought us the importance of maintaining a cool mind before any competition in order to do our best. We will make sure that such event will not happen again in the future. AHS NPCC cadets, let's do our best!

Heritage Trail

Last Friday, NPCC and St, John’s Ambulance Brigade worked together guiding the students of Secondary 1G and 1H OF Anglican High School in their Heritage Trail. We have chosen Fort Canning, a place full of historical monuments and information of early Singapore, as our destination. We organized games in order to allow students to have fun during the games but also have a deeper understanding about the history of Singapore. This will also allow students to build a bond among them and at the same time learn more about Singapore’s past.

We divided the considerable amount of students into 2 groups, namely the ‘Incredibles’ and ‘ Superheroes’. This 2 groups are further divided into 4 sub-groups, Kacheek Meerca, Mynci, Hasee under Incredibles while Orrin, Wocky, Usul and Jubjub under superheroes. Students were each given a worksheet comprising of word search and questions regarding the historical monuments they would be visiting in the Heritage Trail.

The first historical site that we visited is Fort Gate. The game stationed in this site is ‘Makan Sutra’, a game which required students to be blindfolded and guess the food they are eating by tasting them. Students were instructed to send 6 representatives from the 2 groups and these representatives will compete with each other.

Afterwards, the Superheroes proceeded to 9-pound Cannon and Incredibles visited the ASEAN Sculpture Garden.

In the 9-pound Cannon, the Superheroes are required to compete within their sub-groups, Orrin, Wocky, Usul and Jubjub. The game assigned to this site entitled ‘Communication Breakdown’ required the students to pass down a specific message with a mouth filled with saltwater. The group leader will show the first person a specific message and the first person will pass down the message to the next person, until the last person; with saltwater in their mouths. This was rather hilarious as the students had a hard time to refrain from laughing and spluttering the saltwater everywhere while they talk. In the end, almost every group failed to complete the task due to excessive laughter.

Next, the Superheroes went to Keramat. The game stationed here is named ‘牛奶’ (English: milk) Here, the students are required to guess a specific movement that will be carried out by the group leader, mainly named ‘喝牛奶’, ‘泡牛奶’, ‘洗牛奶’ and ‘挤牛奶’respectively.

Meanwhile, the Incredibles are visiting the ASEAN Sculpture Garden, whereby they had to play a common game played during variety shows. Group members of each group were to squat in a row. Whenever a number is called by the facilitator, the number of members must stand and shout “Yo!”. Numbers are called back to back so members are to be alert and react. Due to time constraints, we did not have enough time to complete the entire game and go by the rules. Groups which did not forfeit were allowed to look for clue in that area but we had no time, leading us to just move on to our next station.

The Incredibles’ next station was the Archaelogist Dig whereby members walked into the site and read up on the information available. Moving on after about ten minutes, we approached the Keramat where the students walked around and looked at the tomb, joining the Superheroes.

Unfortunately, due to the shortage of time, the Secondary 1 students did not finish all 6 stations prepared for them. Shortly after visiting the Keramat, we head back to the meeting point and waited for the bus to come. We were fairly disappointed, but overall, it was still an exciting and informative experience for everyone. From this, we learnt that time and proper planning are very important in large-scaled events and we are determine to do a better trail in future.

Passing Out Parade

Last Saturday, the 19th of April, our growing unit commemorated our very first Passing Out Parade, inclusive of a farewell party for our seniors who will be concentrating on their upcoming 'O'levels in the next month, not forgetting our beloved Mervyn Sir and Peiyi Ma’am who are graduating in the near future. It was a gloomy yet lovely occasion, craving memories that are certainly everlasting in each of our hearts.

We started the day with the passing out parade. The Secondary 4s had practiced hard for the entrance march, and they looked excellent as they marched into the contingent, all neat and smart. Next was muster parade, and the Secondary 4s received their Certificates of Appreciation. After the parade was completed, the Secondary 4s threw up their beret, each of their faces painted with smile and laughter. We started taking pictures shortly after, everyone trying to make as many memories before the handing over.

After the photo taking sessions, we changed into our PT kit and proceeded to the Audio Visual Theatre. The farewell party commenced with a speech from our teacher-in-charge, Miss Poh. We have also taken this chance to launch our new “Cadet’s Manual,” a book consisting of all NPCC-related information, compiled by our pioneer batch seniors. Next, we proceeded with the Secondary 1s performance, which was a simple dance routine and stomp of great coherence, surprising the audiences by executing 'Berlahan Jalan', which have yet to be thought to them followed by the speech from some of the seniors.

Next up is the Secondary 2s performance. They enthralled the audience with their cool yet hilarious dance steps. We have thoroughly enjoyed their performance along with the thumping pop song, “Low”. This was followed by the speeches of more pioneer batch seniors.

Afterwards, it was the Secondary 3’s turn to perform. They acted out a short yet funny skit featuring all of the pioneer batch seniors, entertaining the audiences with their humorous personification of their seniors. I guess they never would have expected the Secondary 3s to be so observant!

A video dedicated to the seniors and our instructors was played next. It was touching, yet humorous at the same time. A secondary 2 cadet, LCP Jacinth Chua commented to Mervyn Sir, "I remembered when we are training for the campcraft competition; you told me that the poncho I folded was like popiah. I have been learning how to fold a poncho, and it looks like a pancake now." Tears of joy were shed during the process as we reminisced on the past.

Having watched the videos done meticulously by Sergeant Wei Ting, proceeded to the reception. The buffet catered was delicious, and all of our cadets ate their fill sumptuously. Then we continued on the farewell party, Secondary 4s performance. It was an array of dance of different genres put together. It was eye-catching as it ended up attracting lots of attention from by-standers. Their dance was of fullest creativity which was really captivating. There were dance with umbrellas, hip-hop, etc.

After that fantastic performance, the rest of the seniors spoke their speeches. It was a touching and definitely an emotional moment for everyone. As word by word poured out from the seniors, beads of tears had also plagued every of our unit faces. Everyone shed their tears, emotions of longing and regret already flowing through their hearts.

Afterwards, everyone had difficulties wiping their tears away and cleaning their throats, before proceeding to sing ‘If We Hold on Together’ by Diana Ross and “ 细水长流”.

Then, our beloved Mervyn Sir and Peiyi Ma’am finally spoke their speech. Both of them had been excellent instructors for everyone, both physically and emotionally. As each memory of them flashed through our minds, everyone started crying again. It was indeed a very gloomy moment for us, as we realized that we would not be spending time with them as much as before after this parade had concluded. We could not bear to see all our seniors and instructors go, it was really a heart-wrenching moment.

And thus, we arrived in the last event. Everyone had prepared presents for everyone they hold dear. There were a lot of tears and hugs exchanged. Many of us spoke words from within our hearts as if we did not do so then, we would not have the chance to.

Despite the fact that we were way beyond of scheduled dismissal time, everyone cadet stayed back to spend more time with one another. It was indeed a memorable event that will live forever in our every hearts. We would never be able to thank our Mervyn Sir and Peiyi Ma’am enough for all of the efforts they have spent for us. We could never forget the support and the hard work our seniors have given us. Also not forgetting our seniors who have helped us tremendously in our young years in NPCC, when all of us were clueless about the way things go. Thank you Sir and Ma’am! Thank You Seniors!

Inter-Unit Challenge

As the time past quickly, our new and young CCA flourished into a well organized and united full uniy. In this month of April, we conducted our first Inter-Unit Challenge. SSGT Megan and SSGT Rachel, the Project ICs, had put in tremendous effort in organising the Inter-unit Challenge, which was titled “Journey to the East” and was specially planned to cater to cadets from the lower secondary levels.

"Journey to the East" was quite similar to monopoly, with the exception of buying land or property. There were 12 stations altogether, each with different kinds of exciting games to participate in, with the exception of Station 8, serving as the ‘CHANCE’ station. Teams are required to roll a dice and move to the station they landed on. They had to complete a game conducted by station masters and they were rewarded points upon succeeding the games. Every station had three stages of games, namely stage (a), (b) and (c). The first time a team arrived on a station, they would complete the game stated at stage (a), and subsequently, they would complete the games at stage (b) and (c) during their second and third visit respectively. If they landed on Station 8, they would be asked to do a forfeit before receiving a ‘CHANCE’ card, each card varying from awarding 5 extra points to nothing at all.

In the end, Chai Chee Secondary School came in as champions, followed by Bukit Panjang Government High School as 1st runner-up and Greendale Secondary as 2nd runner-up. The winning teams were given trophies and each school was presented with a certificate of participation.

It was an indeed enjoying experience for everyone, and undoubtedly a success. In addition, AHSNPCC would like to thank all schools who participated and hence made this event a successful one.

Campcraft Competition

After being postponed for a week, the Campcraft Competition was finnaly held on a bright and sunny 22nd March 2008. We, comprising of the participants and supporters, gathered in school at around 8am outside the NPCC room.

After which, the bus came and picked all 39 of us up to the Home Team Academy, where the competition would be held. We waited for our time slot to arrive, and the competitors left for the holding area where all the participants met each other with adrenaline pumping in their blood. Anxiety, stress and racing pulses followed up, and soon it was time for them to enter the competition grounds.

Home Team Academy's soil, Home Team Academy's soft ground. AHS NPCC campcraft team marched into the field, everyone prepared for the upcoming campcraft competition. We have practiced hard and dilligently for the past few months for this bi-annual campcraft competition, under the supervision of Peiyi Ma'am and Mervyn Sir.

The team consisted of 7 Secondary 4 cadets, namely SI Wanling, SSGT Yanling, SSGT Jiamin, SSGT Valerie, SSGT Ngik Hiong, SSGT Sheena and SSGT Ashley, 2 Secondary 3 cadets, CPL Yohana and CPL Weiting, and 2 Secondary 2 cadets, LCP Jacinth and LCP Jolene.

As the signal of the start of the campcraft competition rung, the team started to build their basha(make-shift shelter), gadget and flagstaff. Everyone was concentrating on their work, the cheering of their unit members encouraged them on to give them their very best, and at the same time, adding to their desire to emerge as champions.

Howaver, as the signal that marked the end of the competition rung, we, unfortunately, had not raised up our school flag. This was inevitable due to some differences in logistics used in our practices and in the real competition. Everyone was disappointed, but nevertheless, we had done our best.

The competition has deepened our relationships amongst each other-we had strengthened the bonds between our unit members through the times we spent in our practices. Nevertheless, well done, AHSNPCC for remaining within the top 35% of the competitors.

AHSNPCC Reunion Dinner 2008

In conjunction with the Lunar New Year, our appointed welfare in-charge, SSGT Jolene organised a bonding activity- dinner. Dinner was held at Chong Pang, next to Boon Keng MRT.

It was held right after the NUS Air Rifle Shooting Competition 2008 to celebrate the victory we just had for being in 3rd placing and the individual category win. Not many cadets turned up though, as it was on a Saturday and many had family commitments as well. Nevertheless, we met up at Boon Keng MRT Station, and then proceeded with the 10minutes walk to Chong Pang.

We were amazed with the loaction of the food centre, as it was huge and could occupy many other people other than those of our unit. Dinner at Chong Pang was steamboat style, however food to be cooked was buffet syle (i.e. we had to pick whatever raw food we wanted to cook and then take them):D. Food also included shark's fin soup and crabs.

Void of the normal tensed atmosphere as during trainings, we joked around and got to know each other better in that short 3hours of dinner. After which, we proceeded to have a free-flow of icecream dessert. We did an unconventional "yum seng" not with drinks, but the icecreams(:

Overall, it was an enjoyable experience which brought the unit closer to one another with strong covalent bonds instead of the weak van der waal's forces:D

NUS NPCC .177 Air Rifle Shooting Championships 2008

This day, we arrived in school at around 8.30 am . There, accompanied by our OC Ms Aline Poh, we took a bus to HomeTeamNS at Bukit Gombak.

Shooters have to sign up at the registration booth and also fill in their lucky draw coupons which may just win them a pair of snow city tickets each. we were also reminded to keep quiet so as to not disturb or affect other shooters.

Soon, detail one ended and detail two was about to start. One of the three teams sent by our school went up to take their positions at their respective lanes. The team consists of SSG Michelle (Lane 7), SSG Ray Seen (Lane 14) and lastly SSG Leona (Lane 21). The others were cheering silently for them. Soon, the chief range officer issued the five minutes preparation time which allowed the shooters to make dry shots on their target cards. Live firing was not allowed at this point of time. After the five minutes preparation time, a "Start" command was given and shooters can now carry on with their sighting and competition shots. Many fared well during the first few shots. But after a while, signs of fatigue started to show .

After 40 minutes, detail two officially ended. Detail Three consists of team two and team three, with SSGT Megan (Lane 4), SSGT Rachel Lim(23) and SSGT Jian Qiong (18) in team 2, SSGT Wenxin (Lane 7), CPL Vivien (Lane 14) and CPL Rachel Yong (Lane 21). Both team went through the same procedure as the detail before them.

After that, we went off for a two hour break before the results are announced. We did manage to get the 2nd, 3rd and 4th position for team category and SSGT Rachel lim got 1st runner up for the individual category.

This event has taught us the importance of working well under pressure. If you cannot handle the pressure, you cannot shoot well. It has also proven to other schools that Anglican High has the means to remain as one of the major competitors for the top positions in the NUSNPCC ARSC. Keep it up, my fellow AHSNPCC cadets!

Initiation Day 2008

It was once again, the welcoming of the new Secondary Ones to our unit after a fruitful orientation on 4th January. This year, we received a higher intake than that of last year of 14 cadets. In conjunction to welcome our fellow new Secondary One cadets,the initiation day is indeed successful and unforgettable.

On the day of initiation,the 4 Secondary 3s who are in charge of giving instructions have planned the whole event. The Secondary4s and 2s and the newly joined sec1s were jumbled up and hence forming a circle at the concourse. We started self-introduction one after another. The person next has to repeat the names of the people before her. This is activity was particularly challenging as we are a big and warm family of 46. the Secondary1s were relatively shy and soft but they are trying their very best to memorise their seniors’ names. We then separated into two groups and between us two Secondary 3 cadets are holding a piece of plastic sheet to block us. Each group had to select one person to sit in front. When the plastic sheet is let down by the Secondary 3s, the two girls from each group has to shout out each other’s name. The faster person will win, and the loser will join the winning group. The girls’ spirit was so high that screams and laughter can be heard every now and then. Group 2 has also come out with a intelligent idea of crowding around the person in front either to confuse or to scare the rival's team.

After this activity, we proceeded to the exciting spider web game. Most of the sec1 girls are scared of being held up and transported to the other side. After the seniors’ encouragements, they experienced being supported safely and cross the spider web! Finally,after everyone has gotten into the web, the sec4 seniors even motivated our Mervyn Sir to give it a try.

Playing captains’ ball without having a ball but a sponge, to see which group can gather more water in a designated bucket. The sponge is soaked inside water so a lot of the girls got wet during this game. Although we are girls,we did play violently because the sponge split into 3 after the game! The two water guns and a few pails became our weapons to sabotage each other; at the end of the water games,everyone looked like they had just bathed!

The fun games seems to be over, but it was then time to test our team cooperation, and four groups of girls were made to run around the school to look for clues to search for “money”. The seniors take care of their juniors during the running and every group managed to come back on time. With ample “money” to buy delicious food,the Secondary1s has had their first experience of outdoor cooking. The seniors taught them patiently; and after the filling meal, every face looked contented.
The Secondary3s,who had planned the whole initiation day’s events, agreed that this is enjoyable and worthy to see all the smiling faces after been through so many difficulties and doubts.

CCA Orientation

It was the recruitment period for AHSNPCC once again. Being annual, the day of 4th January was the event which allowed the unit to continue and soar to greater heights. Prior to the actual day, we had intensive trainings during the last few days of the holidays for the Presicion Drill Squad as well as the fancy footdrill team.

Moves were coordinated, established and practiced till perfection was achieved. Choices of songs for the performances were finalised during that period of time. The big day came, and we were all eager to display our hard work and efforts put into a wonderful show which would in turn attract the new Secondary Ones to join AHSNPCC.

There were 2 shifts in total for us to exhibit the stunts, and before that, we set up a booth for interested parties to approach. Our booth was shaped as a pyramid, symbolising the "upward climbing" of the unit. We displayed various medals and even trophies we won from different competitions in the past few years, our pictures and even rifles and batons were part of the limelight!

All of the performances were fantastic, considering that we had only the few days of trainings. Overall, a job well done by the Precision Drill Team, the fancy footdrill team and even those who helped in making the gifts and flyers for the orientation. Models of uniform, a "deceased body mark" and a silhouette of a girl in uniform were all exhibited; it was once of our best display ever! Well done to all and let the eagle in AHSNPCC soar to greater heights!

Sabah Adventure Challenge Course (SACC)

day one-
Met at PA HQ at 1pm for a final briefing before we leave. Then we had to take a coach to Senai Airport before taking an air plane to Kota Kinabula. There, we had to take another bus to the OB Sabah base. So by the time we reached the base, it was already about eight at night. We had dinner then split into our groups and bunks. Most of us could not sleep due to the abrupt change in environment and the mosquitoes that just would not stop sucking our blood.

day two-
We had morning PT which was a run to the entrance of the base and back and followed by breakfast, bunk inspection and flag raising. During flag raising, scores for each bunk would be read out and bunks that are not up to standard would have to be re cleaned. Groups would also have to share a quote of the day.

Next up was sailing. We met up at the boathouse and our instructor went through the basic parts of a sail boat and etc. Soon, we were rowing out to the open seas. We rowed for quite a distance before our instructor, Andrew, decided that the wind was strong enough to allow the boat to sail. He also taught us how to distribute our weight in order for the sail to catch as much wind as possible. Sailing really required a lot of teamwork.

We anchored at a small off-shore island. Half of us went to search for firewood while the other half stayed behind to pitch up the bashas. We had to find strong and thick branches with pointy ends and use them as pegs. Andrew also taught us how to identify good firewood and tent pitching areas. Soon, the bashas were pitched up and Andrew started teaching us how to cook using firewood. Dinner was surprisingly nice and filled our hungry stomachs. We were left to do anything we wanted after that. We sat in a circle together and chatted to pass the time. Time crawls when you have nothing to do. So we slept to make the time pass faster.

day three-
Woke up to prepare breakfast. One of our bread loaves got nibbled by rats and we had to throw it away. After breakfast, we cleared up everything and prepared to set sail. Unfortunately, the tide was not in our favour and we had to wait for the tide to rise again before we can set sail. We used this time to explore the lagoon and just sit around. The water was really really clear unlike singapore.

Finally, after a few hours, the tide rose just enough for us to set sail. We started rowing and rowing like mad while the other group stayed behind for some reason. Later, a tugboat came along and pulled the boat back to harbour. We washed up gratefully and assembled for our high obstacle challenge. First up was trapeze jump. We had to climb up this big tree, jump and grap a pole. It was also an introduction to belaying for those who have never belayed before.
Next up was the rock wall. It is a real rock wall, not those brown surfaces with coloured pieces stuck onto them. All of us managed to reach the top with the help and encouragement of the others while we are climbing. Then we had dinner and a briefing on the 5 day 4 night crocker range expedition. Lights out.

day four-
Breakfast. Then we packed our bags with our personal stuff and rations for the expedition. Then we assembled at the hall for our first aid briefing. After that, we were transferred by bus to Annexe. It was really cold, around 15 degree Celsius. We had dinner and turned in for the night.

day five-
We were transferred by bus again to the starting point of the expedition. Took some group photos there and started trekking. We got tired very quickly as we were still unaccustomed to trekking. There were also a lot of leeches and soon all of us got bitten at least once. After a hard six or eight hours of trekking, we finally reached the checkpoint where we pitched our bashas and tried to cook dinner despite the heavy rain. Some of us got really sick of all this and started breaking down. Luckily, the others pushed us on.

day six-
Having gotten used to all this trekking, we started out at a really good pace and we reached our hut before any of the other groups. The living conditions were so much better with a toilet, bath, kitchen or simply a shelter above our heads. We cooked dinner, had a nice clean bath then chatted. I had really serious rashes on my face and was quite down and stuff. Aiem treated them with calamine lotion and the rash was less itchy.

day seven-
Longest trek.We chose to climb all the way to 5,000 feet so we did not have to trek that much tomorrow. It was a really tough climb and we were so glad and relieved when we finally saw the hut. There was no bath, only taps in open areas where everyone can see you. So the girls from my group decided to wash our hair and bathe with our clothes on. Had a great time bathing :D
We changed into our dry clothes and helped out in the cooking. Andrew taught us some songs and dances and we taught him and Aiem games and cheers in return. The hostess, Mi, also taught me how to cook and I was really glad when everyone asked for seconds. Then we had a speech by Bibi and the two accompanying officers on commitment and how we came here to push our limits, not opt out when the going gets tough. Then Lights out.

day eight-
Shortest trek. We got really high when we saw the main road. Soon we reached Annexe and ate our packed lunch. Because there was nothing to do, we started cooking another lunch and dinner. When the other groups arrived, we were already eating our second lunch. And while they were cooking, we sat down and ate again. We received our Mount. Kinabalu resupply and returned our dirty things to the van to be transported back to the base. Then Lights out.

day nine-
Took the bus to Haleluya Hostel. We had to spend a day there in order to climatise and stuff. Had a briefing regarding the Mount. Kinabula climb then lights out.

day ten-
Mount Kinabalu had steps just like crocker range so we were ok with it. But because our legs were still tired from the crocker range expedition, climbing took a lot of effort. Some of us also started experiencing AMS ( Altitude Mountain Sickness). After a lot of hardwork and perseverance, we finally made it to 11,000 feet. The temperature was ranging between seven to nine degrees and we were all very tired. Lights out at seven.

day eleven-
Happy Hari Raya Haji! We woke up at 1 am and dressed in our climbing attire (thermal, fleece jacket, rain proof jacket, gloves, beanie etc.) . It was really dark and cold. Our legs were really aching and I would not have made it to the summit without the encouragement from my group mates. The trek down was hard but it was definitely easier than going up. We made it to the foot of the mountain where we waited for the buses to bring us back to the base.

day twelve-
we had a final challenge, rafting! We had to tie our raft in ten minutes and then all four groups had a race. WE WON! Everyone from our group was in high spirits. After that we had lunch and settled our logistics. Then we had a briefing by Bibi and the giving away of certs for both the SACC camp and the Mount. Kinabalu. Then we gave our instructors a hug and left for the airport. Aiem came to see us off and we were really very touched.
Back at Singapore, Hubert gave us a last briefing and our blue peter badges. All of us were happy to see our parents yet sad to leave each other.

This camp was really a test of physical as well as mental strength. It really shows how far you can go if you want go. Unlike the OB Singapore where many have attended before, the instructors make sure you are safe but if you fall down, you have to stand up by yourself. They would not be asking if you are ok or if you need a rest or something. It was a really enriching experience which I am glad that I am given the chance to try it out for myself.

Unofficial Air Rifle Training

In lieu of the upcoming Air Rifle Competition, O.C. Miss Poh arranged for AHSNPCC cadets to for for practice at the Home Team NS at Bukit Gombak. Due to the distance for us who were living in the east, we decided to meet at the MRT station of Bukit Gombak; after which we would proceed to the Home Team NS by foot.

We were briefed on the safety regualtions another time upon reaching; they served as a reminder for us shooters to keep in mind. After that, we proceeded to retrieve the air rifles from the armoury. 25 pellets wer given to us at first; along with 10 target cards.

It was a tiring affair to cock the rifle, insert the pellet and shoot a hole on the target card; it was repetitive and we soon found it boring. In any case, we persevered and finished up our 25 rounds, which made some of our knuckles red and swollen due tothe heavy weight of the rifles. Nevertheless, being able to cock a rilfe and then shoot with it was a priviledge to us all and we enjoyed it.

Next round was for the 2nd shift of cadets who haven't shot, while the rest of us from the 1st shift took a break. Once everyone had finished shooting, we decided to pay for the pellets and target cards and go for lunch; the next practice session would after all, be coming.
